So true.

You should see me trying to listen to music on the radio these days. I'm constantly with my hand on the dial and to no avail trying to avoid one bad station after another...Thank GOD for CD's and tapes!! My radio days are truly over.

I don't think there's any disagreeing on this point by anyone, but are you sure we aren't all looking at this through some degree of rose-colored glasses? I seem to recall that even in SoCal, outside of KROQ and 91X, the other 95% of the dial was complete shit! Even some of the KROQ stuff was crap. Unless you had the benefit of one of these stations, WLIR, CFNY, or whatever, I bet the radio was just as crappy as it is now. Granted, many of us DID have the benefit of at least one station...but it wasn't like the airwaves were pouring out with our greatest hits of the era. I think our minds tend to consolidate the good stuff.

Pre-1990's I would listen to the radio and I could tolerate the bad music of back then...even Rap music was somewhat tolerable.. There was nothing that I found bad enough to run and switch the station.. Offensive and ugly is most of the mainstream trash that's out there today...Pollution of the air-waves I say![:(]

I'm with edisonoside on the radio issue. Pre-90's I listened to WFNX in Boston & could tolerate the occasional crap, I liked more songs than I didn't. And, I wasn't annoyed or offended by the music either.
I can't bear to listen to the radio now. Our local alternative station plays stuff that sounds like hairdryers with screaming, the top 40 stuff is awful...
We're almost all Clear Channel here in Syr. & they suck so bad.

I reckon the years 1985-1989 were the worst of them all !!
By 1985 the Wave, Disco and Italo had 'died' in the charts....
And between 1985 and 1989 there was (IMHO) a gap which left a very curious mix of musicstyles. There was all sorts in the charts, and even beyond the charts...most artists didn't know whether to go left or right.... They had lost their direction i think.
House music wasn't around in those years...the 80's (New-Wave) sound had gone in a way, and a lot of artists lost their identitty i think..
After 1989-1990 a whole new dance cultered style emmerged and (new) artists found there way to the charts and the 'hearts' of the people again...But those 4 years between 1985 and 1989 were the weirdest of them all in my opinion.

I chose 1995-2002 because of the glut of prefab boy and girl bands and all the crappy emo and rapcore (Limp Bizkit anyone?) storming the "alternative" charts. Today's music is much better than it was a few years ago, thank god. Of course 1986-1994 followed close behind no thanks to grunge and lame Top 40 radio at the end of the 80's, however I appreciate the classic electronica and techno during this period.

The Disco Music era was the worst chapter in music history. Thank god New Wave came along to fix that.

Well, i reckon that Disco came from the "Soul" in the early 70's, and New-Wave and House/Trance/Etc. came from that, so the fact that you do or don't like Disco doen'nt really matter...
It's all evolution of the 'Dance-Culture' in the end....
I love Disco, New-Wave, Dance, House & Trance.....it's all a part of the 'We don't like Rock-Music' in the end ))

I don't know if I agree with your assertion that New Wave came from Disco, I think it's more rooted in Rock. All of us who listened to New Wave (in my circle back in the day) came from a Rock background and hated disco and dance music. Eventually the synth based bands came a long and created music more suited for the "dance" crowd. That's the way I remember it.

This might also explain why as New Wave went out I jumped onto the "guitar" based bands coming out of the UK and didn't listen to house, tecnno, etc. I also rather enjoyed "grunge" and the general music scene here in Seattle in the late 80's early 90's.

I agree. At least now with satellite radio you can relive the 80s KROQ music (with the rose-colored glasses) with Richard Blade, Dusty Street, Freddy Snakeskin and Swedish Egil. My vote for the worst: the 70s (72-77).
