Wow! what a really eclectic mix! I love that Rupert Hine video - also liked his video for "Misplaced Love". And that Blotto video was hilarious.

The US was inundated with plenty of Cliff Richard and REO Speedwagon, eh? I recorded the first hour on VHS when it was rebroadcast on MTV's 5th anniversary (stuck in a box somewhere, I'm sure). Mark Goodman had that Kevin Cronin stand-in look. Ugh. "W

I was so pissed when Mtv came on the air, my cable company didn't pick it up for almost a year. I had to go to my cousins house to watch it. I remember staying there for hours, it exposed me to a lot of music that i would never have heard otherwise.

I'm in agreement with manekineko...I had always equated the early days of MTV with lotsa New Wave, and there is hardly ANY NW on that list! I am amazed. I just don't remember that much AOR crap in those days. Maybe I was really good at tuning it out. Nigh

early MTV was really middle of the road...thinking back on it now I'm not certain if they were looking for a demographic or simply playing what was out there...don't forget, this was 81 and there wasn't the glut of crap there is now...this was more select

I don't think MTV ever had a direction musically. They just went with the flow. Early they seemed to settle on Rock, then new wave/pop, later Metal, then Rap, and finally non-music shows.
