Don't know, but reminds me, a friend of mine for several years, her boyfriend's name was Nigel, and she is a pastry chef. And not a new wave, or much of a music fan at all for that matter. But the running joke with here for last couple of years was me asking her if she was "Making Flans For Nigel" but her name is Megan so I say "Megan Flans For Nigel"

I finally played XTC for her; now she gets it, but doesn't like XTC. Oh well

I always thought it was some English political commentary that I was too ignorant of. Kinda like if Nigel was "the man" that everyone was always working for or something.

I always thought it was sung from the perspective of "the man" and that Nigel was everyman, controlled every step of the way and too ignorant to know it.

He's a perfectly normal kid who has controlling parents that have his whole life planned from a young age. It's a good song but not XTC's best.

I agree...I always assumed that this was a shot at some English politician, much like Oliver's Army by Costello. If you think of it in those terms it becomes a fairly insulting song.
