Chemical Brothers, Groove Armada, Fatboy Slim, Moby, Daft Punk, etc. owe a debt to earlier electronic acts like Depeche Mode, New Order, Pet Shop Boys, Erasure, etc. They grew up listening to these guys or like Norman Cooke, were contempraries. Electronically produced music was a huge segment of New Wave which lent itself to the club scene and was a natural extension of disco as was house and rap which also exploited the sunthesizer, drum machine, sequencer, et.al. But alot of electronic New Wave which came out of England also had that punk - do it yourself - learn the instruments as you along influence / attitude. Electronic music goes back even further to the Sparks and of course, the godfather of synth music, Kraftwerk but I just think it's interesting and personally gratifying to know the legacy that New Wave has. Some say it's dead. I say it's transformed.

You are so right. It's a natural progression. You just know that these new young pups on the scene sat around listening to Gary Numan, Kraftwerk, Visage when they were younger, oh yeah!

This took some serious time to build. You may or may not agree with his/her take on electronic music, but I think h/she did a hell of a job for trying. And the author's writing is sharp and funny.

I love that it covers everything: Philip Glass, the theme from Dr. Who, even ethereal! And it even insists a connection between Kraftwerk and Hip Hop (damn, why couldn't I have found this link for the notorious rap thread a while back?)

Wasn't "Numbers" sampled for Planet Rock? Pretty direct connection there, if I am correct.

I think it was "Trans-Europe Express". I'll have to check on that later tonight!

Lotsa of people tend to dismiss rap/hiphop as this genre of no substance without realizing it does have a legit place in electronic music history, so I felt that a reminder of where it came from was in order! [;)]

Of course they did Kyxxx. They're our age for cryin' out loud. Moby is probably the biggest New Wave fan of the bunch. YOU know what time it is.....

I have a pretty good OMD Tribute CD. New electronic bands cover a bunch of OMD songs like "Souvenir," "Messages," "Electricity," etc.

I knew the basic genres, but the music samples really helps in understanding all the sub-genres.

I don't understand why they would consider Jean Michel Jarre, Vangelis, YMO, Synergy as New Wave.

Until the rave scene got on. Electronica was fine. But all those rave parties took all the substance of emerging Electronic Music Genre.
