Do New Wave Fans hold Grudges??

Postby bpdp3 » Sat May 08, 2004 9:43 pm

OK, I'm waxing philosophic here - - -I found myself driving into work at 6am this morning.... on the car radio comes Journey's "Don't Stop Believing". For the first time in my life, I don't lunge for the station knob!!

There was a time in my life that I of course hated anything like that song - - it was the arch-enemy of all my favorite groups. Now, I hear it as being part of the "80's" and remember it with almost a sick type of 'fondness'...can associate it with that wonderful era.

I find this happening more and more....songs I've given the cold shoulder to for years suddenly I almost want to hear them - - like taking one last whiff of the milk even though you know it's sour; you can't help it.

Do you guys still hold a grudge, or are you able to forgive the crummy music of yesteryear?

In my case, I now realize that we NEEDED all that type of music to make 'our music' seem more special. We NEEDED hair-metal and endless Bon Jovi videos to make our appreciation of the Smiths (etc.) that much more important and special.

I've been having the same thing happen lately too. The last time I went CD shopping I walked out with the Dead Kennedy's "Live at the Deaf Club" and a Pat Benatar Greatest Hits album. Is that a crime? Is "Shadows of the Night" a great song or do I just

That happens to me all the time, just not with the same music as you guys. [;)]

I never hated Rock music in any of its forms. My manifestation of this condition follows from when I was a club DJ in the late 80s, early 90s. I was forced to play some

I find that the same thing happens to me. I know that I listen to music now that I wouldn't have dreamed of listening to 10-15 yrs ago. I hear a certain song and I won't change the station. I use to be the type of person that would only listen to eithe

Part of it is nostalgia, of course, and I think part of it just may be from simply growing up. There were certainly many things I dismissed when I was a teenager because I liked new wave and I was of course better than everyone else.

I don't mind a

To make a long story short--the "crap" of twenty years ago is better than 95% of the "good stuff" of today..Hell , I'll even listen to the Village People over Britney Spears.

We are just all getting older and all the nonsense that we used to be passionate about is just not as important as it once was. It's all cool.

I've collected a number songs (Journey among them) that I hated back in the day just because they remind me of a certain part of my life. There's still stuff I can't listen to, like REO speedwagon and the sappier Styx songs. I'm approaching 40 and gettin

The category of Rock is not bad. It gets that way when you introduce "Dumb-Ass" into the equation. 80's rock was full of it.[:D]

No kidding. I was in HMV just yesterday, and a little guy (about 9 or 10 years old) was wearing a Ramones T-shirt and he had just picked out a Ramones CD and went to the cash with it. How cute.

I did hold a grudge to WLIR when they started playing Santana and Bon Jovi's new stuff. Nothing against Santana, because I respect him as a musician, but if I wanted to hear his songs, I could go to any other radio station (the fact that he was using voc

You guys took the words right out of my mouth! You all said what I would have said.

Otters: I listened to American Top 40 religiously when I was a kid, too. Right before I got into New Wave....actually, it kind of overlapped. When I started getting
