KROQ Obscure Rarity

FIrst of all, hello to all - new poster here. My name is Scott, I'm 36 and a middle school teacher, who's digging the 80's retro styles and music that my 8th graders are totally into these days.

All right, I'm 99% sure of the track name and artist, but I've been able to find *nothing* on the web about this band. I do have (lost somewhere in my garage) a scratchy copy of it on a cassette tape I recorded off a KROQ flashback weekend back in the early 90's.

The name of the band, as I recall, was Jimmy the Tantalizer, and the title of the song is "Heartbeat Like a Drum" or "My Heart Beats Like a Drum." (I'm banking on the latter; there's some newer band with a song with the former title). The song is done in an almost reggae/calypso style. Some of the lyrics, as best I remember them:

"...tantalize me the way only you can do
I want to be near you when my heart beats like a drum
I want to be near you when my heart beats like a drum
Like a drum"

And there was this female chorus that would sing "Oh oh, ooh yeah yeah" or something along those lines.

I'm looking for any information on the band, and an MP3 of the song, if possible. I have a fairly large new wave collection (mostly on vinyl, but I do have access to a component CD burner), and would be glad to share.

The name of the band is actually Jimmy the Hoover, and the name of the song is "Tantalise". I've got an mp3 around here somewhere, but I just came across this link:

I only wish it was always this easy to find some of the rarities that I've been looking for!

The song's full title is "Tantalise (Wo Wo Ee Yeh Yeh)," and it was a Top 20 hit in England. The video had the band -- who were named by Malcolm McLaren -- swimming with dolphins... in an indoor public pool. They were a racially-mixed quintet.

Great song. A classic case of one-hit wonder. Not sure if the 12" was extended or not. I don't think they released an album either.

Somebody reissue this on CD please [:)]

12" was definitely extended. They also had two other singles, "Bandana Street" which was good, but not as good as "Tantalize" and "Kill Me Kwik," which I saw on GEMM but am not familiar with.

Do any of you guys know the last name of the guitarist? Mark something. I remembered the bassist's name was Flinto (because he was wearing a silly hat in the video with that written on it), and I typed that and the other songwriters' names printed on the single into Google until I came up with Maddog's website -- but she neglected to give his surname, and he isn't one of the songwriters.

Mmmmm... Jimmy the Hoover..

Loved this band. I have a 12 of Tantalise in pretty horrid shape (worn thin) as well as the 45 of Kill Me Quick on Innervision Records. I just dug out the 45. B-side is a track called Ego. What do ya know produced by Anne Dudley, I never realised.

KMK was quite a fun one too though I never knew of Bandana Street (Great, one more to try and track down). Sure wished they had done more stuff.

I'll slap KMK on the turntable tomorrow to see if it faired any better thant my copy of tatalise.
