I like Lush's cover of Wire's "Outdoor Miner". I think Dag Nasty also did a respectable cover of "12XU" (hell, I think every hardcore band covered 12XU).

The Tourists version of that was amazing! Annie Lennox sounded so good singing it. I must admit, my fave version of 'I Only Want to Be With You' was the one by Samantha Fox in 1989 [:)]

Talk Talk's version was perfect -- there was no need for No Doubt to redo it. I watched about 25% of the video once and turned it off -- didn't want it to corrupt a perfect memory of a great song.

Why even try to redo perfection with a pale immitation. There are few remakes that are better, just different. Unless you can bring a new take on the song, please don't try. I did like PM Dawn's rendeition of the Puddle of Mudd song "Blurry" recently on the NBC show Hit me baby one more time -- I would actualy pay for a full version of it if released (though I like POM's version as well)

My votes for excellent remakes include:

I am a big fan of the Aztec Camera b-sides which were often covers.
Blue Orchids' "Bad Education" is excellent.
Their cover of Cyndi Lauper's "True Colors" is also good.
Their version of Van Halen's "Jump" is also a classic.
