I can definitely understand the inter-generational disconnect with and dislike of his musical stylings.
However, I really didn't get to appreciate his storied contributions until acquiring a taste for traditional jazz and big band music over the past 10 years or so.
Listening to his keen vocal interplay with the orchestra and the varied musical arrangements gives me a profound respect for his body of work (as well as Tony Bennett's). [8D]

One band that writes really weird lyrics is Duran Duran. I remember reading their lyrics and just saying to myself, "what in the world are they singing about".

I agree. "Armageddon Days" hits a strong note. It is also the most dangerous song to play over the radio in Tennessee as I quickly found out...people sometimes find everything sacrilege:

yes, their early work (1st 3 albums) have VERY weird lyrics. Simon LeBon wrote very metaphorical lyrics, which is harder to do than your basic simile.

Take "The Chauffer", for ex.:
[i]Out on the tar plains, the glides are moving
all looking for a new place to drive
You sit beside me, so newly charming
Sweating dew drops glisten freshing your side[/i]

and later in the song:
[i]And watching lovers part, I feel you smiling
