J Geil's Band - Freeze Frame

This is SUCH a good album. I know Centerfold was the big hit but there are several songs as good or better. "Freeze Frame" is a lotta great fun and "Rage in the Cage", "Flamethrower", "Piss on the Wall" are all great too. River Blindness (about Africa) is a great change of pace. Great pseudo-New Wave album. Can I get an amen? [:D]

This was one of the 1st cassettes I ever owned. It was [b]right before[/b] I got into New Wave...1982 or so...Anyway, my parents, in a rare display of financial generosity ([;)] !), did one of those Columbia's "Buy-12-Tapes-For-1-cent" deals, and let me pick 4 that I wanted. .. So I picked: J. Geil's [i]Freeze Frame[/i], The Go-Gos [i]Vacation[/i], Men At Work's [i]Business As Usual[/i], and, oddly--Alan Parson's Project, the tape with "Eye in the Sky". I instantly became a HUGE fan of Men at Work (I know, I know...but they were my gateway drug to New Wave!), adored the Go-Gos, only listened to the "Eye in the Sky" song on the A.Parson's ya tape, and DID NOT like the J. Geil's tape. Ugh. Except for "Freezeframe" and "Centerfold". Huh.
So there's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

This album was the soundtrack to many an obliterated evening when it first came out. I always loved Flamethrower and Rage In The Cage the most.

I just couldn't get into it. It wasn't my style of music. Too cacophonous. But that is just MHO; don't have a cow, man.[:o)] Let's hear what the others have to say about it.

I liked every song on "Freeze Frame" except for "Piss on the Wall" (which was better suited for a Ramones album, quite frankly). Can you get an amen on 2 stars for "Do You Remember When?" No way, man! That was the record's lost gem. Would've easily been a hit, too, had Capitol/EMI released it instead of "Angel in Blue" or "Flamethrower."

Too bad that Seth Justman and Peter Wolf had to have their big falling out afterwards. As soon as I heard "Concealed Weapons," I knew the J. Geils Band were done. It was the best track on "You're Gettin Even While I'm Gettin Odd" -- and it wasn't even as good as the worst track on "Freeze Frame."

I had J. Geils shoved down my throat for a few years on AOR radio & I really grew to hate them. Then MTV played the crapola out of Centerfold. With the exception of a couple of their previous songs (Musta got lost & Love Stinks,) I really disliked the band and that album in particular.

I remember my friends & I were all convinced one of the girls in the Centerfold video was Martha Quinn. Yeah, I know...it wasn't.

The lead singer's name escapes me now - but he was hooked up with Faye Dunnaway for years.
When I lived in Boston, I was staring out the window one evening & saw him walking up the street with a bunch of flowers. (It was after Faye though!) He looked the same in person - very skinny and a little unwashed.

that's not to say I didn't like some of the things he did with J Geils and solo (Give It to Me [:p], and Come As You Are [great video])
and he was a guest VJ on MTV in the early 80s; played the best set of new wave vidoes I ever saw, starting with O Superman [:0].

[/quote] I also was one of those Indentured Columbia House members but only for the vinyl releases (starting circa 1976)

My first and only cassette purchases (Late 1981) were 'Freeze Frame', 'Beauty & The Beat', 'Ghost In The Machine'. After that, it was back to vinyl then CDs years later. Cassette albums were the biggest ripoff IMO.

As for Freeze Frame, my favorites 3 were The Title track, Centerfold, and Flamethrower.
It was on par with the prior J. Geils album 'Love Stinks' with my 3 faves being the Title Track, 'Come Back', and 'Takin' You Down' respectively.

Although I liked the title track, this album is quite the cacophony. There are some bands that are more noise than music sometimes, as if they're happy to see how loud and disonant they can be. Well, I always thought J. Geils suffered from this. And Seth Justman brought this way of thought with him when he produced "Rockbird" by Debbie Harry. I will give them kudos for coining the term "Californicating" 15 years before the Red Hot Chili Peppers had a hit with it.
"Do You Remember When" is perhaps my favorite song off the "Freeze Frame" album, aside from the hits.

These guys wrote some great pop songs. I remember rockin' out in my friend's basement to freeze frame/centerfold/rage in the cage, using a broom as a guitar.....I was 25.

That's exactly what I was saying earlier[:)]
It can be fun in small doses, but the cassette as a whole was too much bombast for me. That is just my little opinion.[:I]
