I also agree with a lot of choices here like Taco, corey hart, hayzi fantayzi. I don't think that devo and kraftwerk are cheese though. Modern Talking is italo-disco, are we considering italo-disco NW? I agree that 99.99% of all italo-disco artists are pure cheese but I love their melodies though.

Umm, Kraftwerk are innovators and pioneers definitely not cheese. Influenced many of the top new wave, electronic, dance and rap artists of the last 25 years.

I know they weren't new wave but they attempted the "female lead singer in a mini-skirt "thing -- Patti Smythe and Scandal. They always managed to set my teeth off even back in the 80s. Men without Hats (sorry Ben) were also pretty annoying.

And thanks to Shoyrtt for the Klaus Naomi photo! I haven't laughed that hard since the last time Wolverine was over at my place.

Kajagoogoo, frankie goes to hollywood, men without hats, and dexy's midnight runners were all one hit wonders. Sure their music was/is catchy and fun to listen to. But god does commercial radio have to overplay these bands one big hit into the ground. There were other good one hit wonder bands from the 80's that never recieve any airplay these days. I can see why many people don't like these bands. Commercial radio overkill. Oh yeah they were cheesy too.

I'm not sure what "one hit wonder" status has to do with being cheesy (a vague description at best as others have pointed out). I would mention that a lot of the bands beloved by many on this board (including me) were pretty much "no hit wonders" (at least in the U.S. Top 40). I would consider Wham cheesy and they had loads of hits in the U.S and U.K. If they term cheesy means "didn't age well to the average listener 20+ years later" a lot of music we all like would fit into that catagory.

I agree with NuWaveRx that cheese doesn't necessarily equate to one hit wonders and that was certainly not the intention of my post but I guess as this thread grows, the correlation between the 2 inevitably grows. I think a band like Big Country who had of the best NW singles of the 80's is considered a one hit wonder in the US but they were certainly not cheesy in any way.

I wasn't saying they're cheesy because they're one hit wonders. I was saying that commercial radio overplay can sort of ruin some songs. What i meant by cheesy was their music(which i still like despite radio overplay)

A few things (IMHO) opinion that create a cheezy image:

1. Rely too heavily on a look/style. "Look at me I'm weird I wear wacky clothes and makeup (don't mind that I have very little musical talent)." This also include bands that has dress code/hair style requirements for band members.

2. Break onto the music scene using a cover song as a vehicle.

3. Don't write own music and/or allow producer to shape sound.

Transvision vamp was really cool. Wendy James had a great voice and was hot. Devo? Kraftwerk? Your kidding. They are some of the best of the 80's. Taco was the worst attempt at music and was total cheese.

Now Gino Vinelli and corey hart, thats another story.[:D]
