devo most definitely WERE about singing to a live mic. before they were synthpop pioneers they were a punk band with electronics. they played live, and i do mean LIVE, all the time. sure, a drum track here, a sequenced bass line there, but they were no lip syncers. but let me guess: the flower pot hats, the whip it video, etc. etc. is your touchstone, right? sad. they are STILL known for their live act, and are touring as we speak. i'd go find a show and get your ass educated.

1. Rely too heavily on a look/style. "Look at me I'm weird I wear wacky clothes and makeup (don't mind that I have very little musical talent)." This also include bands that has dress code/hair style requirements for band members.
2. Break onto the music scene using a cover song as a vehicle.
3. Don't write own music and/or allow producer to shape sound.

I dare anyone to try to watch their music videos from the early '80s with a straight face. They also MASSACRED The Beatles' "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and Erasure's "Oh L'amour" -- and in some major case of criminal injustice, their cover of the latter became a bigger hit in Europe than the original.

definately Wham, Haysi Fantaysi, and Sigue Sigue Sputnik. Those latter 2, though, were just having fun and I don't think they MEANT to be taken seriously.
It's worse when they try to be taken seriously. Swampthing had great criteria...sometimes you wince when it's painfully obvious that they don't even write their own music, and allow producers to shape their sound...when it sounds so thin and weak, you can practically HEAR the thinness and desperation thru the prefab music. In modern times, Britney Spears and Ashlee Simpson come to mind as ULtimate Prefab Cheese. Barf.

I'll have to agree with the people who said Sigue Sigue Sputnik. I Just watched a special on them someone sent me, and not one of them could play when they started except for tony James and he was the bass player. All were in the band for they looked "cool". additionally every one of their tracks sounds like Love missle F111 with different lyrics.
