Uh, I did investigate and listen first. I own the first two albums! That's why I'm commenting on this topic rather than just spewing from ignorance. Like I said, it's tuneful stuff, very listenable sometimes. But that's it to me. My point is that - again to me - they're not the next "whoever great band" or the next great era-defining band, unless again the commentary is that the era itself sucks. [:D]

My reaction and that of others is probably a backlash to all the media attention they get. Probably not different than my attitude toward REM - I've got tons of their material but harbor a strange disdain to music that I admit is very listenable.

The thing about Coldplay is that after I get one of their CD's it only ends up staying in my player for a few weeks. I have all 3 and the same thing, I get, listen too it, all the songs are enjoyable, and then after a couple of weeks I'm bored with it. Then the other factor is I hear them everywhere, Starbucks, the elevator, TV, the radio, you get the picture.

With that said I think their great song writers and decent guys, I think they will be around a long time, also I'd prefer to listen to them over anything U2 or REM have put out over the last 10 years, but I'd prefer u2 and rem's first 3 releases over Coldplay's.

Well i do agree the fact that they are on the top of the heap in some ways reflects their peers more poorly then themselves. I mean The Strokes and Interpol while being great bands didn't really make any new ground on their follow-up albums and never really broke through.

I can understand a distain for them being played everywhere on the radio (as i to got VERY tired of some of their radio songs) which in many ways weren't as amazing as some of their non-singles (Warning Sign, Daylight, Amsterdam, Sparks). But the fact of the matter is that if you listen to the radio or watch MTV you will hear the same song over and over again whether its good pop (Coldplay) or bad pop (most everything else). That's why i choose to ignore the mainstream and listen to what i choose. I also find that I end up rediscovering certain songs of theirs that i didn't initially think were that remarkable.

Actually, I like Coldplay, I have all their stuff, but they are a little schmaltzy, especially this last album ("Fix You" & "A Message" are definitely in that category). I agree with some of the other posters, their non-singles are stronger than what gets played on the radio. "Trouble" off of Parachutes was good but I thought "Don't Panic" was the strongest. Same with "Amsterdam" from AROBTHH.

Coldplay may be overrated and self-indulgent, but at least they're still making some apparent effort to write hooks. As opposed to Radiohead, who are under the misimpression that they are Pink Floyd.

Don't even get me started on Arcade Fire...

As has been stated before some of us do like the band. I can understand that people may not share that opinion but its entirely pathetic when people gain enjoyment from trying to tear apart something that they could otherwise ignore. [xx(]

So please chill on the hatred. Save that for the Nickelback's and Staind's of the world.... [;)]
