I wholeheartedly agree with Thomas Dolby, Howard Jones, Ron Mael and Greg Hawkes.

However, arguably the best keyboardist to come out of the entire new wave movement is Steve Nieve of the Attractions. Absolutely incredible, classically trained, improvisation-based keyboardist who does not get his due! Talk about a guy who could do it all!

Frayo, I'm a synth whore and that's probably the reason for my long response. BTW, my first synth was a DX-21 (lil' bro of the DX-7) back when I was 13 and I've been fiddling around w/ synths since then. I'm considering getting a project/band going here, but it's a lame live scene here. Mostly jam bands, blues, Americana... Please kill me. [xx(]

Agreed and they rarely ever get props amongst gearheads on synth discussion boards. I think they utilized lots of samplers.

I don't know what OMD's keyboard player's name is and I'm not sure if the's one of the best, but I have always been a huge fan their keyboard sound because more than any other band with the synthesizer sound, theirs was very ethereal, organic and natural. I think it's very hard to make electronic music sound natural and organic but OMD was alway able to (in their earlier records anyway) create a very sweeping, emontional and orchestral sound, while others like Depeche and Human League were conventional in creating the more obvious sterile, harsh, man-made electronic dance sound, which as good too but different. OMD wasn't the only band doing this but only one of a very few and probably the most successful at it and even more to their credit, their more dancable mainstream stuff was just as good.

I agree guyinsf. OMD had a sort of lush quality to their sound which certainly differentiated themselves from the rest. I'm glad I got to seee them in the old days. It was a good show they did warming up the stage for Depeche Mode here on Long Island.
