NEW SIMPLE MINDS - WOW!

I just received an advance copy of Simple Minds' new album. This is easily their best album in 20 years, since "Once Upon a Time." I realize there's a certain population of fans who only listen to their less accessible pre-"New Gold Dream" material, but to me they reached a prefect synthesis of New Wave swoon and arena rock on "Once Upon a Time." However, this is less commercial than that. Fans of "New Gold Dream" are going to have their jaws drop when they hear "Stranger," especially when Jim Kerr's booming romantic croon swirls with the dreamy, chiming guitars and lush synthesizers. It's like 81-82-83-84 all over again. I'll be reviewing this soon for CDReviews.com. Stay tuned!

Great to hear. I've been on a self-imposed Simple Minds wagon for almost exactly 20 years. Might have to break down. Is there any way for us to designate that our funds NOT go to Jim Kerr?

That's pretty awesome. "New Gold Dream" is my favourite album by Simple Minds and I've been hoping they do another album that sounds like it. "Sparkle In The Rain" was pretty close and I hope this new one is similar too. I love stuff like Glittering Prize, Someone Somewhere, and Promised You A Miracle.

You will love this record, trust me. The opening cut could've been taken from "New Gold Dream." Jim Kerr is sounding better than ever, and those epic, majestic guitars! Lots of icy synthesizers on this record, too, making it a total flashback.

How can you even ask such a question? It was the early 80s, heady times, free love, real music on the radio...freaking crazy stuff. We were just kids. But we were in love. I loved Simple Minds and thought they loved me right back, through New Gold Dream and even Sparkle in the Rain. Then they changed, we drifted apart, and eventually I only heard occasional news of their twisted bombast loosely called "music". Now I'm asked to love again?! I just don't know. It'll be hard... Agreeance. "Street Fighting Years" drove me away, and "Real Life" kept me away. This better not be anything like those.

Not even close. I didn't like those LPs, either. If you want to hear Jim Kerr sing like he did on "Waterfront," "Up On the Catwalk," and "Promised You a Miracle," you'll love their new record. That trademark Scottish majestic guitar riff is back along with layers of synthesizers.

They did have a pretty OK song a couple years back called "Cry," but no one heard it. If they had been doing stuff like that back in '89 or '91, they might have kept their U.S. audience for more than the two seconds they did. And what band in their right mind would finally break through with their 8th album... and then wait FOUR years to release a followup? Did they think they were Michael Jackson? It was seriously like they didn't even want to be popular.

I won't hold Mike to that statement too hard. To quote Hilary, I'll be testing the car before I buy.

Loved everything from the late 70's up until 'Don't You Forget About Me'. Never heard a good track from them after that. So (as stated above) it will take a lot of convincing for me to get me on the Simple Minds track again.

No, from the record label. I do work for the All-Music Guide, the Trouser Press Guide, and CDReviews.com. I don't believe in downloading new albums, especially from '80s icons who are trying to make a living.

I preordered the album from Amazon (sorry, Jason!) and gained instant access to a digital stream of the album. I really like it! I can't say that it sounds like NGD, but it is a good mix of their rock sound with synth overtones.

Of course, they are my favorite band in the entire world, so I am a bit biased (and I heartily disagree with the criticism of their post-NGD work!) [:D]

I am so totally into the song and the video for Home. I have a feeling it's gonna be a good album. So nice to see them almost getting a second career out of this whole Nu New Wave trend.
