When buying a compilation cd of a band you have been looking for for a long time , do you find it dissappointing if the band throws on some live cuts of their tunes instead of the original studio versions?
Even when the band is a great live band , on the cd I still prefer the studio cut. (or maybe the studio cut AND the live cut , but not just the live version)

I really have never been a fan of live albums and in only a few rare instances do I like the live cuts more--J Geils "Musta Got Lost" comes to mind.

What does everyone else think?

I very much agree that I prefer to hear the studio recordings, and feel put off by a compilation that substitutes a live recording for the original. I also hate when they substitute an extended mix instead of the original single as put out by the group.

I also agree. I never liked live versions, they are never as good as the studio versions. They tend to also be faster. I had a friend who listened to live versions of everything in his car, so I drove most of the time.

I prefer studio as well. Never warmed much to live...unless I was seeing that particular act in concert ! Only in extremely rare instances did I acquire, tape/ record, and listen to live music...even New Wave.

This is tough one because some bands sound better live than studio and vica verca. Case in Point Japan's studio albums are simply masterpieces period but thier live "Oil on Canvis" well thats there mulligan[8)]. Japan only came to America once in 1978 wh

I have to agree with Quite Life. I'd like to add that I find that bands that rely to heavily on electronics fall flat live (imho). I may be in the minority but I always thought Depeche Mode sucked live.

I recently bought a Stray Cats "Best Of" CD that appeared to have every song I would ever want on it. Yippee! I took it home and it was all live versions of rather dubious quality. Oh well, that's what you get for CD shopping at Pathmark.

Oingo Boingo's "Best of Boingo" was about half live versions, even "Weird Science" was live! Yuk!
