I think most people are that way, the version they heard first is the best. But, if you don't like the original (or something bothers you about it), I'd say try a cover.

I was dead serious when I said I liked Tatu's version of "How Soon Is Now", they managed to spice it up, and inject some emotion in to it.

Check this site every week for new covers...

Just thought I'd plug a friend.

You have to hear Sabrina's version of "Nowhere Girl" -- check out www.sabrinamusic.com

Heaven 17's version of the Madonna classic "Holiday" is very good, IMHO. Others I like:

"Echo Beach"- Boys Of A New Age
"Ring Of Fire"- Social Distortion
"Jolene"- Strawberry Switchblade
"Wild Thing"- X
"Rebel Rebel"- Dead Or Alive

Does this mean only great covers of 80s songs? Or could it mean 80s bands covering songs from other decades?

If the later is included, I'd like to say Culture Club does an amazing version of David Bowie's "Starman."

Morella's Forest did a good cover of "Voices Carry." It appeared on this EP:

No tactually covered in the 80s, but Concrete Blonde does an excellent cover of Strawberry Fields Forever. Too numerous to mention, there are hundreds and hundreds of covers 80s bands did back then, and probably just as many covers today of 80s bands. I enjoy cover versions, and enjoy really different takes on songs versus trying to sound like the original. Just listen to Cat Power doing Satisfaction for an interesting, but very different feel of that Stones classic.

I know a lot of folks here don't like No Doubt's version of Talk Talk's "It's My Life," but I think it's angrier (whereas Talk Talk's was remote); I like it.

Aztec Camera's cover version of Jump by Van Halen counts as a great 80's cover by a great 80's band.

Down In the Park - Gary Numan - Marilyn Manson.

I don't even like Marilyn Manson!

Is that Dolly Parton's "Jolene"? I will have to check it out.

And the Bay City Rollers also did "Rebel Rebel."

I like it too, I think they stayed true to the original, in terms of style.

Freezepop did a cover of the Jem theme song, I really like it. Hooverphonic's Shake The Disease and Bis' Love Will Tear Us Apart are both favorites of mine as well.
