This So Cal station carries the spirit of the old KROQ (back when they were good) and also plays the best of the new. They even have Sex Pistol guitarist Steve Jones as one of their DJs.

They're not that new, the signal's weak (can't get it in my house), and they play some weird decidedly non New Wave stuff at times (think Bread, Seals & Croft--I kid you not), but yeah...sometimes they can be flat out brilliant radio.

That's Steve Jones (Jonesy's Jukebox). He plays everything from hardcore punk to Glass Tiger, even Journey. Often he'll pull out his acoustic guitar and start playing along. The he'll launch into an old Clash song you haven't heard in years. The context in which this stuff is played is what makes it entertaining and funny. It's this irreverent attitude that brings back the spirit of the old KROQ and the early New Wave days.

Indie's regular music playlist is about the most diverse around. They play the best of the new but haven't jettisoned the good old stuff like some stations and play a minimum of Limp Bizkit, KORN and their ilk. Recent Indie guests have included Billy Zoom and Peter Case of The Plimsouls.

But yeah, the signal is not so strong. Stream it online of you can.

Haven't listened to him in a while, but Jonesy plays a lot of cool New Wave stuff that were not quite mainstream in America but people on this board would appreciate, like Ultravox and Visage, gotta love that. He also did this hilarious "name that tune" contest where he whistles a song and asks callers to guess. One time he actually started whistling the synth hook to Depeche Mode's "Policy of Truth"...radio just doesn't get any better than that!

Speaking of 103.1, is anybody else growing a bit weary of Jonesy's unabashed love of 70's glam or 70's music in general. I enjoy his show for the most part, but he seems to be obsessed with music from the 71-75 time period -- hmmm ... his formative pre-Pistols years. Every show features either Alice Cooper, The Sweet, Marc Bolan/T.Rex, Thin Lizzy, Mott the Hoople or Bowie. True: you hear songs played nowhere else, but from the same 10 artists everytime?

I've been listening for the past few hours. This station is plagued with too much talk and way too much advertisement. On the *rare* occasion that they actual play music I like what I hear. I haven't listened to commercial radio in years, but I don't remember this much advertising.

Unfortunately that's the bi-product of the Clear Channelization of commercial radio, lot's of ads. Actually during the day, outside of Jonesy and the afternoon drive guy, there are no DJs. Only snippets of some pre-recorded stoner voice every now and then. That guy needs to go!

True, Jonesy's playlist can be hit and miss. But it seems he gets complete freedom to play whatever he wants, including guilty pleasures. That in itself is refreshing.

Actually his between song banter is more entertaining than the music. The guy is funny!
