Sorry to say Blir and 2Nu's lists almost read as a list of the worst of the 90s era to me. Counting Crows? Eh, to each his own. (There are some good things on both those lists...I don't mean to sound like a complete jerk...)

Edisonoline and marvymarv had some pretty hep lists.

I can't believe nobody mentioned The Rentals (Weezer offshoot band)...remember the "Friends of P" song? Their first album is real swell. I like much better than Weezer. They seem to fit in well here.

Blur's "Girls and Boys" was pretty much the end-all be-all for me when it comes to wonderfully 80's-sounding 90's music.

Also didn't mean to disparage your list. That just makes me full of shite. Most of us here have probably had to deal with music snobs snubbing our likes and I don't mean to add to that. I have plenty of stuff creeping around in my collection that I would be justified being ashamed of.

Although at this point in my life I don't much give a damn whether or not people think I'm ridiculous for liking Adam & the Ants er whatever.

I also didn't mean to blow off the "list" aspect of this thread. Seriously, most of what I listened to in the 90s doesn't really apply to this one. That Rentals song is just the one that popped into my head.

Dude, SERIOUSLY no sweat. I swear I spent much of the 90s having kids, growing the career, moving around, with a few club nights sprinked into the early and late 90s but a huge void on either end. My list certainly isn't to impress anyone and I've repeatedly admitted my limited scope compared to the gurus on here.

I really do just wanna know what else was out there that sorta fit that alterno pop new wavish kinda feel.

The 90's did'nt suck. That's "middle age" talking. It's the same crap you heard from old hippies in the 60's who said the music of the 80's was garbage. If you don't know at least 10 of the bands on this list then you did'nt follow music in the 90's.

Sorry if I come off combative on this topic but it's a pet peeve of mine and I'm getting tired of seeing a lot of my peers morphing into clones of those old classic rock guys who bemoan the "good ol' days".

There's good music in EVERY decade. The difference being that prior to the 90's, radio and MTV were still good venues to hear different sounds. That all changed in the 90's with Clear Channel and MTV going corporate; which meant strict playlists and no room for anything that did'nt reek of a top 40 record. Does'nt mean music itself went in the toilet.

I'm not trying to avoid making a list...I just can't think of many instances where a 90s band reminded me a lot of 80s or NW er whatever.

I am also not saying the 90s sucked. What Ghosty says is right on about that. I like a lot of stuff from that decade (and every decade of recorded music in fact--I have a HUGE collection of music from the 1920s and 30s for instance, and have tons of 50s rockabilly, 60s garage and psych, etc. etc.)

I ragged on Counting Crows, but how's this for my attempt at making up: a short list of music I like that I (maybe) should be ashamed of...

Elton John ballads of the 1970s, ELO, ABBA, The Carpenters, Black Sabbath, Fleetwood Mac, Wings...this isn't stuff I actually own really, but stuff that makes me light up when I hear it on the radio, etc.
