I just read an article about the Hip Hop term "crunk" and how it originated from a Dr. Seuss book and that got me thinking about "new wave". Prior to the 70's and 80's, "new wave" was more commonly applied to French film directors like Truffaut and Renoir, as in "the french new wave", back in the 50's and 60's.
Anyone know of the term being used before that?

The french new wave is what I hear repeatedly referenced with nothing prior to that.
BTW, it's Alain Resnais the director of Hiroshima Mon Amour fame rather than Renoir the painter. Ah, but there you have a new wave to new wave connection! [;)]

I don't think I've seen any of his latter work from that time. Maybe he did some movies with that style of writing and directing, but I'm leaning towards "no" 'cause he came from the old school which New Wave rebelled against. Those New Wavers were kids who grew up on Renoir[8D] Godard, Truffaut, maybe Melville and Clouzot, all the way to late-comers like Breillat, who isn't exactly New Wave, but damn if I know any other director who portrays the things she does the way she does. I feel like I wanna include some Italians in this. Someone like Pasolini and Bertolucci...

You know what's intriguing? While they praised Nic Ray and a couple of filmmakers who worked in the system as "auteurs," the author didn't mention the Beatniks, of which John Cassavetes came along. His film, [i]Shadows[/i], came out in 1959. Same year those New Wavers released their final cuts[8D]

I had been doing my radio show for a few weeks and a VERY irate guy called me up and chastised me harshly for using the term "new wave" to describe the music I was playing. He then went on to explain the French new wave of the 50's and 60's, and I was just thinking to myself, "what the hell is this guy talking about?" So I just told him that I didn't mean to be inaccurate with my terminology, blah blah blah (hey, you never know who is generous during pledge drive) and he hung up. Thanks for the topic though, now I have a better understanding of the maniac who called me...

In my library work I often use a Dictionary of Word and Phrase Origins. Next time I'm on campus I will see what I can find.

I like the secondary entry for new wave: "any creative group active in the innovation and application of new concepts and techniques in a given field". That's why there has to be a temporal limitation on what we consider our new wave.

Hear hear! That's why I've always insisted that New Wave really began it's downturn in 1982. I know many will disagree but by then it had been around for 5 years and was already starting to sound repetitive. New Wave wasn't "just" keyboards it was a reaction to MOR radio and rock. The real "New" Wave was 1977-1982.
Which is not to say that there wasn't good music after 82 it just wasn't very new by that point. Come on, Oingo Boingo, Sparks, etc by that point were okay but they were hardly sailing in uncharted waters.

Ironically, The Sparks Brothers/Half-Nelson were an established tour de force in the 70s and 80s and were at the forefront of American New Wave (they formed around 1972). Them and Pere Ubu, I am surprised don't get much respect for marking American territory in the scene[V]

I meant no disrespect towards the Brothers...I simply meant that by the mid 80's the sound of "New Wave" was starting to become rather formulaic.
