New Wave hub--are you interested?

This forum inspired me to setup a Direct Connect music hub for new wave. Surely, you're familiar with the technology, but it works like a napster... i.e. everyone connects to the hub and shares their mp3's with each other.

If you're interested, please let me know in this thread. I'm looking to have it all setup this week. Mind you, this doesn't necessarily replace sending cd's to people--because we all know how fun that is. But, it does offer a quicker, easier access to the music. It's a lot easier than emailing songs to people as well

i'm not very familiar with macs, so my ability to support you connecting to the hub will be conceptual and limited. but, there is indeed a client available to connect, so I would assume mac friendliness.

WINDOWS: Use DC++. It's not the best client out there, but it's easy to use. Download here: http://dcplusplus.sourceforge.net/

I checked it out. It's very cool but not very friendly to Macs. There are some bugs that prevent you from joining rooms.

I too would be interested. Any chance of at least some minimum kbps for better quality mp3s, like maybe at least 192. Is this even possible to request, or is it not possible becaause different people may already have them at less than, or maybe more than, 192. Or, like napster was, you can slect which one you like from the list based on the higher quality?? This sounds like a great idea.

The dc server that I'm using doesn't work exactly like Napster, I was just using it as a common reference for the concept of sharing. So, it doesn't support the napster idea of searching / displaying details of each file's audio quality, but it can be inferred from the file size, i.e. a bigger file is a better quality.

Anybody who rips anything from cd/record will, of course, be encouraged to do so at a higher quality level.

Consider this the loop. Thanks to all for the interest! I've got a dc server and easy "domain name" setup so you're not typing in a string of numbers. Just need to finish off some of the configuration, security, and figure out how to administer it.

The hub is setup, ready to go.

Sometime this weekend, probably tomorrow evening, I'll email everyone the information on how to connect and brief tutorial on how to configure your client. See Natephish's post for what to download.

I probably won't post the connection details in the thread because we're using usernames/passwords. So, if you're interested, please post to ensure you get emailed with the details and a u/p. Once it gets going, Ops will be able to sign up new people if, say, one of your friends wants to join.

If someone could help by setting up a tutorial how to rip music from cd/record, that would be quite helpful for new users.
