It's a pity that many dudes are not very familiar with The Waterboys except may be for their Mega Hit: The Whole of the Moon. The truth is that there are three phases in the Waterboys' career. The first and the best is the NW phase, then the Irish and then the acoustic. They have released excellent albums and I consider: This is the Sea as one of the best NW albums together with The Wild Swans: Bring Home The Ashes and The Colourfield: Virgins and Philistines. TITH includes not only The Whole of the Moon but my favorite track The Pan Within, full of passion and drama, then Medicine Bow, Don't Bang the Drum, Be My Enemy and the wonderful This Is The Sea. The next best album is a toss up between the Self-titled The Waterboys with A Girl Called Johnny, I Will Not Follow,It Should Have Been You, Gala and A Pagan Place with All The Things She Gave Me, The Thrill Is Gone, Rags, The Big Music etc.I would recommend also Fisherman's Blues and the Live Adventures of the Waterboys Live which includes the majestic extended version of The Pan Within.[;)]

Thanks for the feedback fanciz, and I'm sold. It's just that the fiddles, banjos & tin flutes of the "Irish" period were clouding my perspective. Like you, I'm a huge fan and own most of their recordings... (now where is that edit button, they belong in my 'best of' list too [;)])

BTW, it is a shame that, for a lot of people, the Waterboys begin & end with The Whole of the Moon (as great a song as it is).
