Morrissey does one hell of a bang up job on There Is A Place In Hell For Me And My Friends live. He and his band take the scant and maudlin grand piano instrumentation of the original studio recording and jazz it up to a funky new level with a wicked cool, rockabilly interpretation. Very finger snapping and toe tapping.

What do you guys and gals like?

"I Need a Man" from the 2-CD live set Eurythmics put out in the 90's. It's far superior to the album version, IMHO.

The Cure has done some great live recordings, especially their "Trilogy" DVD. The version of "One Hundred Years" in particular is amazing.

I really dig the live performance of the Fixx that was recorded on WLIR back in 1982 before "Reach the Beach" ws released. They do a version of "One Thing Leads to Another" - which nobody at the time knew - that completely rocked. I listen to it more than the studio version.

One of my favorites is Thomas Dolby doing "One of these Submarines" from his "40" live CD that came out a few years back. He really does a great job with it.

I apologize in advance for being so horribly, annoyingly predictable - Transmission by New Order off their Retro bonus CD. It's a rocking rendition of the great Joy Division favorite. A close second is New Dawn Fades by Joy Division off Still - much better than the studio version on Unknown Pleasures.

Hey, at least I didn't say Baby I Love Your Way by Peter Frampton! [:D]

I'm going to be horribly predictable too.

Blondie's One Way or Another from various cds. I like it simply because it's a song that sounds rawer and more urgent live, and because Deb mutters like a mental patient through the last half of the song.

Siouxsie & the Banshees - Helter Skelter - don't know why I like it better - I think she has a great voice live.

I always like hearing a good live version of "Meat Is Murder" by the Smiths, it's such a haunting song with the sounds of blades in the background and Marrs great guitar work repeating throughout the song, and Morrissey vocals sound extra melancholy.

On the World Violation tour, Martin Gore did an amazing stripped down version of I Want You Now from the Music For the Masses album. He just sat down on a chair and finger picked on an acoustic guitar while he sang. Nice.

U2 early live trax RULE...

From 'Under A Blood Red Sky' - "40" and the 'Live From Red Rocks' performance video version of 'Sunday Bloody Sunday' (Such Charisma and Passion!)

From 'Wide Awake In America' - "A Sort Of Homecoming", "Bad" (the EP version and the Live Aid versions are defining watershed concert performances IMO (These guys were at the top of their game.. heck they still are!)

Peter Gabriel live versions of <a href="http://www.connollyco.com/discography/peter_gabriel/solsburylive.html" target="blank">'Solbury Hill' (B-side of Shock The Monkey)</a> and 'In Your Eyes' (Featuring the haunting and evocative voice of Youssou N'dour) surpass the musical calibre of their studio renditions (IMO).

They usually sucked live, but this song rips like the studio version on 'roids.

Duran Duran have an awesome version of Cockney Rebel's "Come Up and See Me (Make Me Smile)" that rocks. And what makes it cooler is that they never released a studio version of this song; only the live version.

When Terri Nunn played the Vanderbilt on Long Island in the summer of 2001 she did an acoustic version of Pleasure Victim. You could have heard a pin drop.

I also heard Kate Pierson do an acoustic version of Candy that was pretty incredible.

Honourable mention goes to the Deb every time she sings Fade Away & Radiate live and you just haven't lived until you've seen Christina Amphlett sing I Touch Myself with nothing but a honky tonk piano for backing.[:0]

totally agree with U2 live vs. studio takes. Especially with "Bad", which surpasses the studio cut. And [i]Under a Blood Red Sky[/i] is amazing.

I'll have to pick Big Country's "Angle Park" from [i]King Biscuit Flower Hour[/i]. The enthusiasm of the crowd meshes with Stuart Adamson's vigor wonderfully.

And I'll also mention Peter Gabriel's "Biko" at the first Amnesty International benefit show. The ending is so haunting live.

And the Stranglers' "Golden Brown".
