You're damn right! Joe Jackson's first two Lp's were two of the best to come out of the New Wave era. As for the T-Heads, their first 3 Lp's were also fantastic!

The T Heads songs that got the most airplay were often overplayed and less than their best. Their mainstream recognition came only after New Wave got popular. And after much of their early experimentation.

But back in the late 70's early 80's they were quite inventive and even began incorporating African rhythms into their music. Quite a groundbreaking idea for a rock band, let alone a "punk" one. And years before visionary Paul Simon even thought about it. Of course when Simon did it he was rewarded with a Grammy.

Songs like "Cities", "Crosseyed and Painless", "Once in a Lifetime" and "Life During Wartime" stretched the boundaries of what a rock song could sound like. Some of their early attention came because of their quirky yet accessible cover of Al Green's "Take Me To The River".

The T Heads were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame though. So somebody somewhere recognized their talent for experimentation and ability to take musical risks.

They are like Rock's equivalent to your your weird uncle, kind of strange and you don't know what to make of them, but amusing all the same. Just don't go into the garage alone with them.

I never thought these guys were "brilliant" and wondered a bit at all the critics' love for these guys; however, I still liked them somewhat. They sure were inventive, and very strange, and experimental, but still thoroughly listenable. The only part of your post with which I'd respectfully disagree would be that "they always sounded the same". NOPE! But--LOL--if you mean they always sounded weird and primal, I'd agree. In fact, I think their sound is Unclassifiable.
Oh yeah, but I LOVE [i]SPeaking in Tongues[/i], their best!

I liked some of their songs but I could never REALLY get into them. I own nothing by them nor will I ever. And Tina Weymouth & Chris Franz wanted a 3-way with a girlfriend of mine.

I like the Heads too, mostly because Byrne grew up about 2 miles from my house in Maryland. [:p]
