Recipients of my Transitions CD series will recognize one of my favorites, Chanson Sans Issue (ne vois-tu pas) by Autor de Lucie. The song has a lovely flowing vibe with a cascading rhythm guitar, an assertively laid back bass hook, a smokin' beat and hypnotic French vocals I just fall in love with over and over again. I'm all about the kick back and this gem delivers with atiitude and then some. Nice.

So what do you jive to in foreign languages?

Can't understand a word, but all are great songs none the less.

The Japanese reference reminded me of Messegluck in Dusseldorf, by Frl. Menke. Interesting mix of German and Japanese in a early 80's style.

Ofra! I love Ofra Haza. Poor thing had to go and kick the bucket. But I still love everything about her.

One of my recently discovered favorites is Kate Bush's "Ne T'enfui Pas."

My only exposure to Ofra was the abysmal version of Temple of Love (touched by the hand of Ofra)in which she warbled like a Middle Eastern Mariah Carey. Needless to say, I wasn't a fan based on that.

She's much more than that. I have her Yemenite Songs album (I don't recall if that's the actual title), and it's good, though stripped-down and not at all synthy like her later work. Her U.S. release of Shaday is really good--considering it was circa 1988 that it was released and, therefore, was synth-heavy while still prominently featuring her voice. Her lyrics were touching and frivolous, all in the same album: a good balance. She was a very smart business woman and a strong-willed woman, given her rigid religious upbringing. Her mother and her religion dictated that Ofra settle down, while Ofra argued that she pursue a career. Of course, Ofra won out, but not without the objections of her mom. I think she's great.
