Ok, maybe I'm getting old here, but I just had to share this experience. I went into what is supposed to be our new "indy rock/punk" music store yesterday to check out some new stuff. While there, I ordered a new CD from The Bomb, which is the new band from Jeff Pezzati, singer of Naked Raygun. The girl at the counter had never even heard of Naked Raygun! I'd expect this from a mall store, but a place that's supposed to specialize in punk??? But wait, it gets worse! At a loss, I tried to descibe Raygun as "kinda melodic punk, sort of like an american Buzzcocks". The girl looked at me kinda puzzled & said "I've never heard of them either". Sad, isn't it?

How old was she? A 21-year-old was born in 1984 - punk and new wave are ancient history to people that age.

Outside of the really big names, I certainly didn't know a lot about the artists of the late 60's and early 70's when I was 21, and I already had a pretty big music collection at that time.

I was at the Mall the other day, and the girl in Hot Topic had on an Agent Orange shirt. I meant to inquire about it but was afraid to find out if she even knew who they were [:(]

I think this girl was in her mid 20s. I guess I should just be happy that there's an alternative to the mall stores in my area. Still, it's kinda weird, I've been there three times now & they never have music playing. WTF is up with that?

Well, remember how you were in the 80's and you would think about the 60's and how looooong ago that seemed. The same amount of time has passed now between today and the 80's. Most of the kids today that are into 80's music are into it like kids from the 70's were into ersatz 50's rock,Grease and Sha Na Na.
Yeah, there are always going to be budding scholars that get heavily into a period of music history but most treat our 80's Punk/New Wave as campy fun.

There is hope for todays youth.A quick check through my 16 year old sons cds reveals STOOGES,Who,Zep,Ramones,Bowie,V.U etc.Our house is divided where the males=RnR the females=country(blah).But I agree most kids today only buy and know about the flavor of the month.

When I was a teenager the rock stations played tons of music from the 60's - I knew quite a bit of it well. During the 70's we had a huge '50's revival and got very familiar with that era's music. My mother grew up during that time too & I always heard her old Elvis, Everly Brothers, Chuck Berry, etc. records.
Beyond that I remember being able to read a lot about performers from previous decades.

I don't feel that at the time, early to mid-sixties rock was treated as nostalgia or campy. It was played along side current stuff. I think things have changed as music becomes more disposable, and less younger people are willing to acknowledge the history of popular music.
