Seattle - KZAM, KJET & KYYX

Hi, I as a joke typed in KZAM on google. Wanted to see what I would find. very cool! this blog is. I love all your stories of listening to the radio. I first heard KZAM and Steven Raibow in 1979. It blew my mind. My first rock show was DEVO, at the Showbox, in seattle, that same year,I was 16. I owe my awakening to Steve, he was the greatest, his wit, and knowledge, was incredible. I have a few tapes of KZAM, and all of the station identifications, done by , the Cowboys, DEVO, and the band that did all the daily ones. I dont remember Steve being on KYYX, he was on KRAB after KZAM died, and I have many tapes of his show, it was on sunday nights, and I scheduled my live around it. Can write tons more but have to go........

Odd question.
12 miles west of Seattle, in Bremerton.
Oh, and I attended the KYYX "New Wave Spectacular".
Day 2.
Saw Oingo Boingo, Missing Persons, Wall of Voodoo.
Ran into Danny Elfman in the vendors hall amongst herds of people, got his autograph, talked a while about the Forbidden Zone, then critiqued people around us, it was mind melting. Quite possibibly one of the greatest new wave events held.

OH MAN! I can't believe I found this board. HUUUUGE FAN of 80's NEW WAVE. HUUUUUUGE FAN of KYYX and was devastated when it DIED. Went to school at LYNNWOOD HIGH SCHOOL and graduated in 1984. Miss the days of SKOOCHIES and a relatively carefree existence! Love ADAM ANT, MINISTRY, ELVIS COSTELLO, HUMAN LEAGUE, and so much more.

Did you get the DVD of Forbidden Zone? I got to meet Richard Elfman at Ameoba Records here in SF for the DVD's release and have a brief chat about how out there his whole family is. Nice guy.

Hexion, Thats cool! Maybe, I was at scoochies up to 3 times a week in 84-85. Was part of the Bremerton Fun Bunch or The Cabin boys. Would arrive in the Zimmy Death van, or ride my vespa.

Found this board googling KZAM FM as a topic at the Seattle Music And More forum turned to KING TV's Christmas In The NW with Michael Tomlinson and DJs that worked at KZAM. Yeah, commercial radio in Seattle may never reach the progressive heights of KYYX and KZAM AM and FM again. I listen to KEXP until the play a noise rocker, and KMTT maybe once a week.

Anyone still there? i just stumbled across this thread... I grew up in Bellevue and spent a bit of time hanging out with the staff of KZAM, 1540AM, over my lunch break from Sammamish High School. Down to Arby's for a Beef & Cheddar and a Fruit Punch (sometimes laced with something...) and then over to KZAM in Old Bellevue. Some buddies and I conducted an interview of Stephen Rabow that became a front page story of our high school paper. We held a vigil "the night the music died" and the AM morphed with the FM, sequing "Radio, Radio" with "Come Together", if I remember correctly. I still have my yellow KZAM and green "Rock of the 80's" pinback buttons. Anyone remember Virginia, the receptionist at KZAM??

Hey Anakelea, thats really cool you actually were there, at KZAM. I too was in high school when the station died. I have cassette tapes of the last day, and a few of oddball days, like for the contest where you could mail in your bands tape, and they would play a song on the air. The Attitudes was my bands name. Horrible, simply horrible. Ha. I have the green KZAM button. I still wear it, to bands that existed back then, but still play now. Like Bauhaus! oh and the Buzzcocks, I wore it to both of the late ninetees reunion shows. Echo and the Bunnymen, and Psychdelic Furs.

hex, was it really that late that KYYX went to their "New Wave" format ? am i just being stubborn ? i seem to remember they played that yummy music before then, like in '82. i remember listening to "Freddy Snakeskin's Countdown" (and i could be slightly wrong on his last name), which came on on late Sunday afternoons. around that time, (Fall of '82) is when i seriously got into NW, as opposed to just being a casual listener. i was weaning myself off of Kasey Kasem's Top 40, listening in vain for NW, and Freddy Snakeskin's Top 20 came on KYYX after Kasey Kasem. Not on the same station, of course. now THAT was killer Top 20 ! i remember thinking that that format was so subversive....the wacky djs, the movie clips, stuff like that.

do you remember how KYYX put out a short-lived magazine called "The Wave" ? THAT was hilarious. it was just like the station. and of course, i'd scour each month's Rocket for anything about KYYX & KJET.

anyway, i could be wrong on those dates, but i'd swear KYYX was playing NW before '83.

it might have been 82 that KYYX started...i know that it was may 84 that KYYX changed format to soft adult contemporary. it was freddie snakeskin that hosted that countdown show.

spudboy....is there any way you can send me a copy of the last day of KZAM?
