Right on Eduardo. They're from 2000 and on but that's quibling. These guys have two very slinky/clubby albums starting right off the bat with their first single "Never the Same". One of my all time favorite lyrics - the usual "...not the same girl you loved last night" verse followed in only one of the verses by a whispered "...not the same girl you f'd last night". Phew!

You remind me they're overdue for another album - been 3 years since Divine Operating System. What I wouldn't give for a double bill of Goldfrapp and Supreme Beings! [:p]

Nice list. We were listening to the same stuff. Silverfish were underrated. I saw a Touch and Go band called Laughing Hyaenas open for Sonic Youth once and OH MAN!

Also got to see Cows, Dwarves, Melvins and Jesus Lizard whilst living in Chicago. Good chit.

Yeah, I got to see most of those bands while living in Denver in the early 90s. I caught the Laughing Hyenas once out there & they were awesome. Their singer has a new band called Easy Action that's well worth checking out if you get the chance. Also, Shannon from the Cows is now in the Heroine Sheiks with members of the Swans. Wonderfully demented stuff.

I'm agreeing with alot of the bands everyone's mentioning - good choices people. I'm surprised no one's mentioned Saint Etienne or Dubstar though. They're more on the synthy / sequencing side that I totally loved from the eighties which is different from the more guitar / live drums sort of bands I was naming when I started the thread. Anybody else dig this variant of nineties alternative music?

Nobody has mentioned the Flaming Lips. Though they began in the early 80s they really hit their stride about 1990. "In a Priest-Driven Ambulance" is a great lost classic of music of the era. Rocks hard, it's trippy and hallucinogenic, has some beautiful tracks mixed in with the screamers...it was a soundtrack for me for a few summers. Their next album surpassed it in terms of uniqueness and depth but it lacked the fly-by-your-balls energy of its predecessor.

I may have missed it, but I don't think anyone's mentioned Swervedriver. Their debut album "Raise" (from 1991) is really a good one.

While they were lumped in with the UK shoegazer crowd, I think they were a little more rock than some of those bands. While the sound definitely has a '90s vibe and is guitar-centered, I think the sonic textures and the sort of futuristic angle of many of the songs would appeal to a lot of NW fans.

I believe this album is out of print, and some of their other albums are hard to get stateside, but it is worth checking this album out. Honestly, it's the only record of theirs that I am familiar with, but listening to it you can discern that the band at this point were architects of the early 90s sound, particularly in Britain.

Also, their career history reads as one of the more depressing tales in rock and roll. Shafted time and again by management, dropped from one label after another, recording albums that their company decided NOT to release but also not let them have the master tapes or rights for, etc. etc.

They deserved better. I think they are underrated and deserve a retrospective release. Hell, their b-sides were better than a lot of contemporaneous bands' "A" material.
