I posted this as part of another thread-but I was listening to and being "new wave" in a small town that didn't have a plethora of bands-clubs-zines-what have you-
Most of my college classmates were stuck in the REO-Styx-Journey nexus of rock at that time.
We had one bar that played the music, a college radio station (where I was a deejay for many years)and a record store that was run by the same weird, friendly, gay man that owned the club (Most of the guys I ran into who were "new wave" were gay-I was about the only hetero male in our scene-but that meant there were lonely women around too!!).There was new wave on cable TV also
I realize people's defs of "new wave" are different, I was into the punk-power pop side of things-my fave raves were Ramones, Jam, Undertones, Fleshtones, Gang of Four-Clash, Plimouls-probably the most "mainstream" band I liked was the Police and later REM.
So, how did the "wavers" oustide the big cities do it. How did yo "get along" in the heartland-I'd particularly like to hear the stories of Midwest new wave fans.
