I have always loved New Wave songs with an oboe or oboe sound. Here are a few of my favorites to start. Please add more:

There's quite a bit of oboe in Box of Toys "I'm Thinking of You Now". It's also a great song!!

How about a theremin that sounds like an oboe? Listen to "Reap The Wild Wind." It sounds a bit like an oboe.

I HIGHLY recommend the [i]Kyuuketsuki Miyu[/i] soundtrack, if you're into oboe music. Also, classical music by Albinoni (I have a compilation which is pretty much all oboe!).

Oddly, a song I just mentioned moments ago on another thread contains what I am almost certain is oboe...quite a nice and up-front oboe figure right at the opening of the song. It's "Elegant Chaos" by Julian Cope. And how I would like to hear it again...

The most overt use of Oboe I can think of is Roxy Music's "Tara", an instrumental that features it throughout at the end of Avalon - a very cool though not very new wave piece on a classic new wave album. I'm sure Andy Mackay must play it numerous times elsewhere as well since he was an oboe-ist with the London Symphony before joining Roxy to do mostly Sax.

This trippy Old Grey Whistle Test performance of "Ladytron" from their decidedly spacey days in 1972 starts with his oboe solo. Try not to fall out of your chair when you see the completely stoned looking Brian Ferry. Also get a load of the long-haired, cheetah-printed and gold-gloved Brian Eno toward the end of the video with his crazy synth with huge oscillator knobs, pin patches and joystick! I'd say they were pretty experimental in their Eno days, LOL!

Well, geez, I stand corrected. I always thought that was an oboe. I just searched all over the 'net for proof, but I guess you're right.
