Robert Smith is still making music. Gloomy genius or Goth "hasbeen"?

He should've stopped completely after Wild Mood Swings.
And Siouxsie called. She said Oi, Fat Bob... I dumped that look in '87!![}:)][:D]

I still think Robert Smith is great . Every new song from The Cure may not be great but there's still some gems from Smith and company to be heard .

and had he stopped after moodswings, the absolute gem of Blood Flowers would have never happened. IMO, that is one of their greatest releases.

I for one am glad to see The Cure keep going, and who cares about his weight, or looks. Sure would be tons of artists starving if they were judged on their appearance instead of their music. Just my opinion.

Exactly. It's the music that matters. Fuck, I would have never missed Romeo Void simply because I thought Debora Iyall was not attractive (just my thought), I didn't give a fuck. She was great.

I've been more than slightly obsessed with The Cure for almost 20 years, so I'm not exactly impartial...

I do not think Robert Smith is a "has been." Granted, I did not like the last album. In fact, I thought it mostly sucked. But all bands are entitled to a musical turd, and that was his. The next one will be better (unless Ross Robinson is involved).

I'm so glad The Cure is still making music. They may never put out another "Wish" (my favorite) or Disintegration, but I'm so happy to have something from them--even when it sucks. The same can be said for Depeche Mode and New Order and all those other bands I love that are still making music. Yeah, they're all old and getting bald/fat/etc., but who cares?! I'm just so thrilled they are still here, giving me something to look forward to. I buy their music because it moves me and makes me feel--not based on what anyone looks--or doesn't look--like.

Is Robert Smith a genius? I think so. Technically, he's not a great musician. Vocally, nope, not great there, either. But when you add up the atmospheric, hypnotizing, mesmerizing music and his voice, it all fits--and I think it's wonderful.

Head on the door - jewel
Disintergration - jewel
Bloodflowers - turd
the 04 Cure release - monumental turd.

Having said that, it didn't stop me from buying the expanded remastered CDs that came out in 05 & it won't stop me from buying a CD with all new material on it. I'll always have hope for Fat Bob. I think has-been is a cruel term & I only reserve it for people like Britney Spears or Justin Timberlake.

PS: Siouxsie kicks Fat Bob's butt any day of the week!

So.. Robert Smith is old and fat?? Does this mean that he is not great?? Of course not!! I know that The Cure's latest album is not as good as the others (especially if you compare it with Faith or Pornography) but I think it's great that he continues to make music that inspires many people. Anyway, there are good songs in the album (Alt.end and Laberynth are examples of this).
I don't care if Robert is fat or if B. Sumner is going bald... what's important is that bands like No, The Cure and Depeche Mode are still on the race and making their fans happy.

Man, I wish I could understand what makes Blood Flowers a turd BHols.....I respect you have your opinion, but man every Cure fanatic that at least I know absolutely loves that release. It is simply mesmerizing in my opinion, the songs build, I think it is some of their very best work. And in concert performing it, fuck, it blew the crowd away.

I understand you think it is a turd, but can you elaborate as to why you believe it is? I am curious that's all. Whatever your reasons, I respect your right to them, fully, just trying to see your vantage point. Thanks
