Canadian New Wave

Postby sabsmiller » Sat Jan 14, 2006 5:16 am

I am currently developing my own new wave / punk radio show and, being in Canada, was reminded of the concan 40% canadian content law. I am racking my brain and mp3s for as many canadian new wave / punk / late 70s / early 80s acts out of canada.

I would greatly appreciate your collective thoughts, name drops, and mp3 files.

For name dropping from that time period (and generally wallowing in nostalgia) you can't beat:

<a href="http://www.punkhistorycanada.ca/">Punk History Canada</a>

There is a solid discography at: Punk and New Wave Rock from Canada (just google the phrase).

and nobody re-issues the really obscure stuff like <a href="http://www.suddendeath.com/">Sudden Death Records</a>

Here is an MP3 from the era:

<a href="http://www.cyberus.ca/~cs/Ugly - All because of you (live).mp3">The Ugly - All because of you (live)</a> from the Last Pogo album (Live in Toronto, 1978)

The Payola$, Paul Hyde and the Payolas, and Rock and Hyde...are all pretty much the same band under different names. I have a number of mp3's I can upload on Tuesday when I return to work.

I've seen her mentioned a few times on the boards & keep meaning to send this track out for those interested.

Before she rechristened herself "DalBello", Lisa Dal Bello cut a couple of disco albums in the late 70's. I have no idea if they were sucessful in Canada. I know they didn't cause much of a stir in the U.S. But, I thought I'd pass this relic on from 1979 - Pretty Girls (the Disco Rock Mix)

Not a bad song, interesting footnote for someone who became so sucessful later in the 80s. I apologize for the less than steller quality - I took it from an old 12".

I know there's been some great threads on this topic before. Try a search with terms like "80s hell", "worst of the 80s" or "gino vannelli".

[:D] j/k...more or less.
