I never saw Culture Club as even slightly New Romantic. Soft Cell really don't fit the label as well, and Adam and the Ants barely squeek by. Duran, Spandau and Talk Talk were New Romantic for their debut album only. Of course, no mention of Mobiles anywhere, but it's nice to see Berlin Blondes mentioned positively. Their one album is one of my absolute favorites. Not a bad song on it, and maybe even a bit ahead of its time.

Yes, I've seen the magazine. I own it. My point is that regardless of what the press called "New Romantic", there were definitely questionable candidates. I also have a couple of New Romantic documentaries, and they heavily talk of Culture Club. They are the furthest from New Romantic. Just an example.

I agree Culture Clubs music was more pop-soul.
But I think their image was totally New Romantic.

They pretty much define the genre in most people's minds, I'd think. I guess you don't consider them so because they weren't big into synthpop? My argument would be that New Romanticism was more of a fashion thing than a music thing.

Is New Romantic defined by a muisical style or frilly shirts? If it's music then culture Club and Adam Ant were not New Romantics. If it's defined by frilly shirts then Prince was New Romantic.

And that magazine is nothing to base "informed research" on. Hell, it has Michael Jackson and Madonna in it!

I got the New Romantics DVD on ebay. It's a UK DVD so you need a multiformat, region free player to view it. It was recorded off UK TV. Here's a link to the current auction:

Now, I hope no losers give this seller any grief for selling this. It's the only way to get this kind of stuff. I love ebay for great stuff like this, but I hate the losers that report these kind of DVD's and think they are doing some civil service. How the hell would we get it any other way? It's definitely worth the price. Very entertaining, and not bad quality either!

I agree that "New Romantic" was categorized by the press as the new gender-bending, frill wearing, face-painting musicians and bands that were coming out at the time. Since that initial wave, I believe New Romantic evolved into a sound. Bands that I consider to be in the "New Romantic" genre are bands like Fra Lippo Lippi, Seona Dancing, Roxy Music, Lotus Eaters, The Bible, Fiction Factory, Blue Nile, Furniture, B-Movie, Ultravox, (and several others). They have a similar "sound" that usually is piano-driven, along with heavy synth overtones.

Just my 2 cents.

In Austraila, Culture Club and Soft Cell where one of the most important exponents for the New Romantics. For me personally Visage is the most important band. The 'movement' really existed through the clubs. That was fantastic at the time. Also Bauhaus, new Order, Kraftwerk and Joy Division fitted in at those nights. Thats what really counted (for me) at the time. The going out...and the dance minded music and the enjoying with that crowd enjoying the same thing...
