I was thinking about this very question just the other night...

Der Kommissar by After The Fire (the 12" version)

For me, it's the quintessential new wave song:
-great synths
-hooks that will rip your face off
-cool lyrics ("don't turn around, uh-oh...der kommissar's in town, uh-oh, you're in his eye and you'll know why, the more you live the faster you will die)
-it was their last single released...they broke up before CBS even released it! Kinda like your ex-wife winning the powerball the day after your divorce is final...

Kinda jazzy, upbeat, daceable, funky-.

My kind of music is funky. Its funk and dance and disco and new wave all in one... (hence, my fav. artist is Re-Flex).
It has elaborate FX in it....moves like a dream...with 4 and 5 fingered chords... lots of minor 7ths.
The bass line is a repeated loop and is fingerable with your left on a Roland JX board.
Layered samples consisting of other Roland boards...and an Oberheim Matrix 12 and Fairlight CMI...
tight vocals... of some guy wearing more makeup than any straight man ought to.
and then a part where the song changes everything...just for a dance move or....7.
Then A crazy guitar solo comes out of nowhere (is their even a guitarist inthis band?)...and it comes to a close with a bunch of orchestra hits tuned to bassslines following none but pentaonic blues progression.

My abolute perfect song:

Moulin Rogue - Lady, Lady, Lady

Tunes that come close:
Kaja - Whatever You Want
Laura Brannigan - Hot Night
Heatwave - Boogie Nights..

and well....i love disco. It never died for me.
Also I love italo.... I love everything funky and weird and full of quirky synthesizer noises.

What I have composed to be a staple of the music I like is all in pentonic blues...and is a ragtime piece. I love ragtime. Its fun as hell to play.

Some great songs here already mentioned from great bands.

I go for the dramatic AGAIN - TUXEDOMOON from their second album Desire. As it is playing now and hitting me hard (again).

BUT under normalcircumstances I would go for IN THE NAME OF TALENT (Italian Western Two) from Tuxedomoon from the same album. (where it goes 'Life on override...) Has got IT for me.

When people ask me what kind of music I like, I tell them power pop. When they don't know what that is, I tell them to think what "My Sharona" and "That's What I Like About You" have in common. I'll go with that, but neither are my #1 song, because it varies on my mood and on how long it's been since I heard it.

I like "Starry Eyes", but it's not the perfect song for me. There's something about the production I don't like, but I can't put my finger on it. Maybe the guitar is too far in the background.

"Touch" by Secession. typifies top shelf NW; dark synths, great melodies/hooks, gothy/romantic vocs.

"Hold Back The Rain" by Duran Duran

"The Cutter" by Echo And The Bunnymen. anthemic and unprecidented

Punk:

"Hybrid Moments" by The Misfits. 50s inflected horror punk. incredible vocals, melody and attitude.

"Promises Promises" by Generation X

Pretty much anything by The Clash

Hardcore:

"Vanity Fair" by Government Issue

"Ready To Fight" by Negative Approach.

I've got to say

Temptation by New Order (original 12")
Just the right combination, and totaly lustful.

But then I saw above someone say Hold Back The Rain by Duran Duran, and that song too has the most incredible combination of sounds/styles in what I would truly call a New Wave great!
