Frankly, I stand by my original reaction. Prince has done NOTHING of merit for 15 years, maybe more. There are a gazillion collections of his hits already, so who cares about another one. What we really need is the Color Field CD to be re-released.

Well that's a hell of a statement to make unless you actually own the 20 or so albums Prince has releases since 1991. Is your idea of merit based on chart success or if a song got on Z-100 or if it was "popular"? That's just a bizarre statement unless you've sat and listened to all of those records. There's some AMAZING songs there.
Woodlandpark had it more right by saying Prince has been dissapointing since the 80's. Prince has been wildly uneven. Sure there has been greatness on occasion (I Love You But I Don't Trust You Anymore) but IMHO there are only 2 or three great tracks on any Prince album since the "The Gold Expereience" in 1995. At some point in the early 90's, after a misguided flirtation with Hip Hop that even Prince admits was a bad idea, he seemed to jettison the songcraft he was known for in favor of peerless musicianship. Simply put, whether alone or with other musicians, you don't get much better musical skill than a Prince album. Sadly, if you don't have the songs to back it up, you're making music that only other musicians are going to be impressed with. I have several friends who are jazz aficianados that more or less hate the entire history of Rock but will single out a Prince track for it's bass line. Usually the song they're singling out is one that just did'nt connect with me as I'm more interested in melody and structure than skill.
I don't forsee Prince changing his style to suit my tastes but I'll keep on buying his stuff because I know at the very least it's always going to be interesting.
In a way, Prince reminds me of Mark E.Smith. They just keep cranking out these albums and as a fan you know it's not the good old days but you're holding out for that one great new track...and you get it.

I see it only goes up to the SYMBOL album before Prince entaagled himself in that legal nightmare with WB. Some of these tracks are definitely NOT what I'd want on a supposed overview of Prince ("My Name Is Prince", "Sexy Mutha"-the G-rated edit of Sexy MF) but quibbling aside it's nice to have a few of these extended mixes on CD (I've got all of them on a cassette I dubbed from vinyl).

nope, this is correct. why the purple medley is on there is baffling, but prince DID have input on what went on this, and that is a nice change of pace. he has not wanted to do business with warner bros in the past, and this is seen as a nice thing for the fans: many of these 12" songs have never been on cd, and some are the long album versions which is great.
prince has been very uneven since the symbol album, of course. he has no people in his camp to tell him "no" or that he is being self indulgent, and that is a shame. wendy and lisa were that for him for years, and egotist that he is, he canned them when their presence on his albums got to be too much (around the world in a day, parade, the original configurations of "sign of the times"). and so his output, like "new power soul" and "rave un2..." is pretty piss poor when compared to ye olde days. it's a shame.
but working with w.b. again is promising, because rhino are known for DELUXE reissue campaigns, so could this be the start? will we "mountains" extended, or "girl" or "hello" or a host of other 12" b-sides never on cd? i hope so.
i'm really happy with this new collection, made with input by the fans on two major prince sites. it's a beginning for prince, and it makes good business sense; because have you heard the mastering on "sign of the times"? DREADFUL. and criminal that it's so in need of a remaster.
whether we get any vault material is up in the air. prince is a jehovah's witness now and abhors cursing. and those old bootleg songs are dirty, so i don't know. he edits stuff now. "if i was your girlfriend" was supposed to be on this current collection, but was axed, along with "dirty mind" and "head"- and yet "erotic city" is here (we can fuck until the dawn) as is the album cut "controversy" with the lord's prayer in it. who knows? still keeps us guessing, that prince.

and as far as "zillions" of greatest hits? nope. there's 2. the hits from '93, and a "very best of" from '99. get your facts straight before you pop off. hell, missing persons or naked eyes or toni fucking basil have more greatest hits cds out.

Hey..."New Power Soul" has "When U Love Somebody" on it and that bizarre hidden track about murdering a girlfreind (both of which are great in my opinion).
You're right though, Prince needs somebody to say "no". "Emancipation", for example, could've been one hell of an album but as a triple disc set it's just way too much filler.
I wish Prince would also let fans compile a another "best of" disc for all of his albums from "Come" up to "Musicology". The best tracks from those discs would make for a solid and flattering retrospective (I've done it myself on CDR when I'm in the mood for a quick fix of his latter material).
Here's hoping Rhino pulls an Elvis Costello with Prince and we get those double disc remasters with unreleased music.

Just in case anyone else was looking forward to getting the remastered 12" versions on CD, www.housequake.com is reporting that the Ultimate Prince 2CD set is delayed past 3/14 to an unspecified date, possibly to avoid conflict with the new Prince CD.

I don't care if it's technically New Wave or not -- there were some 12" mixes I was looking forward to. Hopefully they'll set a new date soon -- the release has completely disappeared from the Rhino site.

I got the entire Prince Catalog (all studio, B-sides, 12" versions, Unrelease Demos, Live Tracks and the 2 disc black album) thru Soulseek or BT for free! So I am not complaining.[:D][:D]

Let's hope the back catalog gets remastered soon. Rhino would be the perfect company to do so. His stuff over the past 15 yrs or so has been up and down. But, the man still puts on one hell of a show. His tour in 2004 was one of the best I have seen in a long time.
