anyone here like the loosely based genre - featuring minutemen, gang of 4, shriekback and others?

Definetly overhere !!

I was thinking about it yesterday (pleasantly influenced by this grat site and forum). I can remember that I was SO much into pf, that I really needed to hear spunky basslines to get into buying records.

I started indirectly for the craze dance-funkindustrial of Cabaret Voltaire and 23 Skidoo. Not bands that jump to your mind at thist thread. But that started it for me. When I heard Y from The Popgroup, I was definetely hooked to punk-funk. Soon followed by the agro-punk-funk of James (Chance)White and The Blacks

With Blitz-night bands as Shriekback, A Certain Ratio, Medium Medium, and New Order there was this new English movement towards dancable funk. Jah Wobble (ex-PIL) was crossing borders from going from Punk-dub (PiL) towards funky/dub baselines with 'How much are they' with old CAN members Czukay and Liebezeit, which made me found CAN again...

The Pop Group punk-funk family/spring off became big ! At first Mark Stewart mentioned, that they couldn't play and it was a punk-think to get up on stage and that they made Y (firs record). (Stewart was quoted on this in the book Alternative Rock). Howver, I played it yesterday and you can hear how talented they were playing their music. It's really more than an attempt to try to play...and it still holds surprises to me after more than 25 yrs. after I bought it.

Bands that sprung off The Popgroup:
Rip, Rig & Panic, Pig Bag/Float Up/Neneh Cherry, Maximum Joy, Mark Stewart & The Mafia, Glaxo Babies and The New Age Steppers (more dub).

I consider Magazine also tocontribute to a funkier sound (Barry Adamson's bass-lines !), but also Clock DVA/The Anti Group (Adi Newton) who was from the Sheffield 'scene', where bands like Cabaret Voltaire, Hula, and even ABC were well acquainted.

Radio Clash from The Clash had also fantastic funk-basslines, which shows a bit how varied and important funk-bass became in 80's music !!
And in Germany the music of Palais Schaumburg (Holger Hiller) had also punk-funk fundaments. There first self named album is a real recommendation for people who are into punk-funk. A bit avant garde, but wonderful moments of music !

magazine do an odd cold funk version of Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)

the slits as well (new age steppers is: ari-up, the singer from the slits, whose mother married john lydon btw...)
can't really improve on that list - great bands all of them!

I like this stuff, too. Shriekback, Gang of 4, A Certann Ratio, Jah Wobble...I really like the bass end of things, and these guys do it well.

That's one thing I have to gain yet. All these great band, yet, huh.
May be you've got some recent band tips for me ?

I did touch the Minutemen before, but don't have anyof their music yet. Worth it, kola ? (synchronize watching)

minutemen are PUNK with funk basslines... quality music, i'd recommend "double nickel on the dime" to you.

pigbag are great too - i was made-up last month when i found "papas got a brand new pigbag" on 12"!!!

a new band like "dead 60's" mix in the punk-funk sound with "the specials" ska sound and "the clash" guitar sound - i like them a lot.

if you haven't already got it - you have got to get a hold of "my life in the bush of ghosts" with david byrne/brian eno - it features bill laswell of "material" on a lot of the bass - and inspired a lot of the bands mentioned above - essential album! [:)]

Ok, thanks. Minutemen sounds good. Heard of them. As far as I can remember I read some interviews with them and they caught my special attention as they were working with film with their concerts. (like I was doing too for bands here in Holland).

Pigbag I know. Haven't played them for a while though. The 60's I'd like to look into...

My life in the... I heard so often in my pub at that time, that I didn't bother to get it at home too. Thanks for the synchronize watching. If something jumps to mind...I'll add here (again). [;)]

i've had "bob hope takes risks" by rip, rig and panic, stuck in my head for the last three or four days...

good book on the period is "rip it up and start again" by simon reynolds!

i've got to get some 23 skiddoo now! [8D]

GO4 ? Thanks for that tip... I don't know them.

Medium Medium. Their album seems to be hard to get. Would like to have it. I only have their single.
Furthermore Glaxo Babies is also mind throwing good. '9 months to the disco'. Popgroup with less disturbance and more speed...

23 Skidoo are boody brilliant. Also their 'new' album. I had t o get used to the hornsection. But these are songs that last...!!

BTW......Tones on Tail are playing through my stereo now.
A DEFINETELY great album. MEANS OF ESCAPE is funking the ceiling !!

Ofcourse,Gang of 4. Logical enough. I wasn't very awake while reading that...

Glaxo babies is exciting stuff indeed. I wonder if it's possible getting your hands on 'Nine Months...' !

APB are my current favorites. I just picked up the "Something to Believe In" album... an absolute masterpiece! Every song has that great funky type of bassline that Gang of Four made popular with songs like Damaged Goods.
