80's fashion--getting a bad rap????

Postby randy » Sat Jan 21, 2006 6:35 am

Everyone makes fun of those 80's fashions, but are we being fair? Look at the fashions AFTER the 8o's and compare!!
So what--in the 80's you had big hair! Shoulder pads!Acid washed jeans! But hell--they fit you!! Your average hot lady in pictures from the 80's are--still hot!!

Wasnt that fashion better than the slob grunge look? Cant think of anything hotter than a woman in flannel!!

Wasnt it better than the rap look? Cant think of anything more attractive than the crotches of your pants below your knees so that it looks like a load of shit in your pants!!!!!!!!!!

Wasnt it better than the teeny bopper whore look that every tween today just loves????

Come on--stop ragging on those 80's looks!!!!!

This has been a public service announcement..now back to our regularly scheduled program......

Good points but there were other looks also than what you pointed out. Acid wash jeans were BAD! (glad I never wore them, not being a denim fan ever). There's also gender bender which wasn't always such a good look.

I have to disagree. Most of the 80's fashions are something I look back fondly on out of pure nostalgia but everything you described sounds (and looked) like something out of Ringling Brothers.[:D]

Not as bad as the 70's though. Not quite as grotesque. Grunge fashion was a godsend for me since I was poor and it was all "Hey man, it's not the meaningless surface crap that's important...but it's what I've got inside!" which was a completely bogus sentiment but as a twentysomething I totally bought in to.

And don't forget that idiotic heroin chic look in the nineties.....[xx(]

Comparing the lousy fashions of the 90's doesn't excuse the 80's for some of the worst fashions ever. Parachute pants? Chachis with buckles that served no purpose? Checkered sneakers? Miami Vice pastel suits with the sleeves rolled up? I miss the 80's but I don't miss the clothes one iota. They sucked then, and they suck just as much now, nostalgia be damned.

But I LIKE the 80s fashions! It so needs to make a comeback.

Start putting on belts over long sweaters!

Yeah, and start wearing jock supporters over your pants. That would be in the 80's spirit(hey, Madonna did it with bras).

For the most part I wore black so I don't look dated in my 80s pictures.

Acid wash & parachute pants? UGH! A lot of trashy guys had the Michael Jackson red & black jacket from the Billie Jean video if memory serves me correctly... what were they THINKING!? The mullet was another hideously bad look. And let's not forget that Flashdance craze...

WHAT A FEELING!

I really, really wish I still had my studded belt from the eighties. They're very happening now. Just think about how flexible that look is. Punks, Goths, Heavy Metalists, B-boys AND cugines back in the day (Philly knows), Fetishists and S&Mers the world over all know the appeal of a good black leather belt covered in two rows of pyramidical silver studs. One row is just too thin and three rows is simply overstating the fact. Two rows are perfect [:p]

Mesh tanktops!

Every decade had good and bad. Just because some of the extreme styles are things to cringe at now, doesn't mean everything from that era was like that.

BTW, It's funny that pointy shoes were brought back for women but not for men.

The 80's style is great if you know how to achieve it correctly. It's not the same looking like Madonna than looking like one of the women in Dynasty.
Some 90's fashions were awful.
