Best Joy Division and New Order songs

Postby TheMunDial » Sat Jan 21, 2006 1:23 pm

Hello all.

I'm beginning to take an interest in the odyssey of those guys that began as Joy Division and continued as New Order. I only know a very limited number of songs from each venture, namely "Love Will Tear Us Apart" and "Atmosphere" from the former and "Blue Monday" and "Bizarre Love Triangle" from the latter.

So...can anyone suggest good songs by them that I should look into?

The best song of Joy Division is Love Will Tear Us Apart, then I would place Transmission, She's Lost Control, Digital, Shadowplay, Means To An End (my current favorite), Atmosphere, Glass, Isolation, Warsaw, Days Of The Lords and Ceremony.
If you plan to buy a CD, I would advise the Box Set: Heart & Soul for the simple reason that if U like the band, U are going to buy it anyway. If not Substance would be OK, then Unknown Pleasures then Closer.
This is what I have but I'm planning to add Les Bains Douches, Warsaw,The Complete BBC Recordings and The First Peel Sessions.

JOY DIVISION CLOSER New Wave
JOY DIVISION HEART AND SOUL,The Ultimate Collection 4 CD’S New Wave
JOY DIVISION JOY DIVISION 1977-1980 SUBSTANCE New Wave
JOY DIVISION PERMANENT 1995 New Wave
JOY DIVISION STILL New Wave
JOY DIVISION UNKNOWN PLEASURES New Wave

Regarding NO, the task of selecting their best song is a bit harder, I would go for Blue Monday, Bizarre Love Triangle, 1963, Temptation, Love Vigilantes, Dreams Never End, Thieves Like Us, Ceremony, True Faith, Round & Round, Regret, State Of The Nation, Perfect Kiss, Shellshock etc
I have quite a few NO CD's for your reference in case U decide to go into the endless task of collecting NO albums.[:D]

My favourite JD songs (at this moment.. I change opinions very frequently on this subject) are: LWTUA, Insight, Disorder, Atrocity Exhibition, Isolation (it's the one that best expresses who I am) and A Means to an end ( a legacy so far removed, one day will be improved.. it's so catchy).
My favourite No songs are: Temptation, Blue Monday, The perfect kiss (that's an epical song), Thieves like us, Regret, Round and round, Crystal.

I think that all New Order and Joy Division songs are my favourites... just today I've listened to both bands like three times.
I've listened some The Cure and Talking Heads today to vary...

Mine's a little worn,
But it has the labels on the wrong sides.
The Beach = Blue Monday and
Blue Monday = The Beach

Does that make it rare?

That record took me forever to find when I first heard it in Tower Records. At the time, none of the people there knew what it was.

I have no sense of adventure...

Joy Division: Love Will Tear Us Apart, Transmission

New Order: Blue Monday, Bizarre Love Triangle, The Perfect Kiss, Vanishing Point...stuff like that

Yeah I know, not particularly unique or off the beaten path
