Here¡¦s some more recent rips! Since variety is apparently the spice of life, I¡¦m putting up several genres worth of songs:
Count Past Five: Bad Boys of Brighton (from the Bad Boys of Brighton 7¡¨, 1987, Epithet Records)
<<<<LINK EXPIRED>>>>
This is a great, catchy little mod/powerpop song. Sure, it¡¦s from 1987, but give it a listen!
Zru Vogue: Nakweda Dream (from the 1981 ¡¥Zru Vogue¡¦ LP, self-released)
<<<<LINK EXPIRED>>>>
Sub Pop called this the ¡§best independent single of 1981¡¨. And then everyone forgot about it. Until now! It¡¦s slow, cold, psychedelic, melodic, [insert adjective], etc. Good stuff.
The Local Moon: A Experience (1988, self-released 7¡¨)
<<<<LINK EXPIRED>>>>
So what if it¡¦s from 1988, this is some awesome dark, gloomy, ethereal music! It¡¦s like a mix of classic Dead Can Dance, Bauhaus, and¡K let¡¦s say Xmal Deutschland. This may be my favorite of the week!
Life: Touch the Sky (1983, from the ¡§Music Biz Showcase ¡¥83¡¨ compilation, Showcase Records)
<<<<LINK EXPIRED>>>>
This is the first of 3 minimal/synth songs I have this week. I don¡¦t know if this is the same Life that had some members of New Order, or something else entirely. It¡¦s a live recording (soundboard quality, though), and it¡¦s damn cool.
Billy Clone and the Same: Asexual (1979, from the ¡§X and Y¡¨ EP)
<<<<LINK EXPIRED>>>>
I bought this based on the band name alone. It¡¦s great, punky new wave.
9353: With All Respect (1983, from the ¡§9353¡¨ LP, on R and B Records)
<<<<LINK EXPIRED>>>>
It¡¦s an odd name for a band, but who cares? This is some great Devo-esque new wave.
Your New Friends: During (1986, from the ¡§During and After¡¨ EP, self-released)
<<<<LINK EXPIRED>>>>
Here¡¦s the second synth song this week. It¡¦s an excellent, slow, and somewhat dark song that embraces the artier side of new wave.
Marilyn and the Movie Stars: Luftpause (1981, from the selftitled EP on Aim Records)
<<<<LINK EXPIRED>>>>
If Gang of Four was synthier and fronted by a girl, they just might sound like this.
The Enormous Room: You Wrote a Book (1986, from the 100 Different Words EP on Sharp Records)
<<<<LINK EXPIRED>>>>
Several people dug the twee/C86 stuff I put up last week, so here¡¦s another one in that vein. Enjoy!
Shades of May (aka RED FLAG): Distant Memories (1984, from the 91X Local Heroes compilation)
<<<<LINK EXPIRED>>>>
Here¡¦s the final minimal synth song of the week¡K Before they were known to the world as Red Flag, the brothers Reynold were called Shades of May. They released one song, Distant Memories, on a compilation of San Diego bands. They sound like a very, VERY stripped-down version of their later incarnation, using sparse, primitive synths and drum machine handclaps, but wow it is great!
