Ministry - With Sympathy Re-issue +3 (8/12/08)

Postby tenohtwo » Wed Aug 13, 2008 2:48 pm

Thing is, Al sold the rights to With Sympathy to Arista back in '83 or '84 to cover studio debts. Al was actually the only member of Ministry to sign the Arista contract, none of the other members had a deal with the label (probably a good thing). At this point, I gotta believe the problem is over at American Beat. They seemed to have already obtained the rights to re-issue, since they allegedly made a new CD with bonus tracks. Of course, Jason just mentioned the 'note in the file', so maybe somehow the release got hung up legally?

Just an edit here, and I hope he doesn't mind me quoting him, but ex-Ministry (1981-83) keyboardist Robert Roberts posted these comments in a current With Sympathy thread over on prongs/ministry:

"My understanding is that Al had testified in a deposition that he had sold the WS royalties in the summer of '83 to help finance the tour..So unless he bought back those songs, as he has claimed, they no longer belong to him.."

"Arista didn't force Ian Taylor on Al. Taylor and Al and Vince Ely all knew each other from when Special Affect opened for the Psyche Furs. Al got to choose the Producer and the Studio.."

"But then WS went over budget, didn't chart as high as expected. Al sold his stake in WS to cover debt and then parted ways with Arista. It not much more complicated than that.."

"Al sold the rights to the WS songs to Arista to help finance the WS Tour and part of financing the tour was paying the band. This is according to his testimony in a deposition.."

"I've never seen a royalty check for anything. Then again, I've never signed any contract with Arista or Ministry."

Can't remember if I posted this link before, but if you ever want to get some great insight on the early Ministry years, check out this interview with Roberts, conducted by bisquitodoom over at the same site:

<br>No, that was the only video. Closest to that album was the promo video they shot for Same Old Madness in '82:

Would someone tell me why I'm seeing that little bit of the embed code next to the video?

By the way tenohtwo, I believe there are music videos for "Work For Love" and "Effigy" though I cannot be 100% certain. One reliable source claimed to see the music video for "Effigy" back in 1983 on a local channel that would play music videos overnight.

I am by no means a Ministry expert but the first time I read this thread I thought to myself I had seen a video for Effigy. Could obviously be wrong as I have a hard time remembering what I had for breakfast but ....

Sorry guys, I can tell you right now that there are no videos for Effigy or Work For Love. Revenge is the only single from WS to have a video.

I checked the Amazon link again, and now it says "This item has been discontinued by the manufacturer." Not good.

From what I understand, the reissues are on hold for the time being as the parent company tries to sell the label off to another company. Hopefully this one will come out eventually!

Surly, are you referring to the original label (Arista), or the new reissue label (American Beat)?

Following is a list of the ones I have:

Smithereens - Green Thoughts
Squeeze - East Side Story
Billy Squier - (don't remember the titles, but his '82 and '84 albums)
Joe Jackson - Beat Crazy
Haircut 100 - Pelican West
Brian Setzer - Knife Feels Like Justice/Live Nude Guitars
Romantics - Romantics/National Breakout

They are pretty basic with minimal liner notes, but the sound seems reasonably good on the ones I've picked up.

I've been reading different sites, and hearing that "Twitch" is supposed to be re-released soon, anyone have any info on this? Love the disc, I wonder what they'll do to jazz it up? hopefully, we'll get some b sides and some mixes and so forth. Lets keep our fingers crossed gang, that both "Twitch" and "With Sympathy" get a proper release(or at all)[:)].

Did you get TwitchED already?

It's nothing amazing, but it does have some different versions/tracks. I really miss All Day not being on it, though.
