Thompson Twins 2 on 1 CD BAD!!

Thompson Twins 2 on 1 CD BAD!!

Just got the Product/Set CD set. The ONLY thing from masters is the album tracks from Product and the unreleased Name Of Love mix. The whole Set album, and EVERYTHING else is absolutely godawful vinyl transfers. The irony is they picture a master tape box for Set on the inside of the back insert, though no master tape was used at all. It's one of the worst I have heard, seriously.

Thank you for the heads up. What a shame... They actually show a picture of the master tape box? [xx(]

Thanks. I was about to order it, but thought to come here and see if there were any comments. I might still get it anyways ...

Here's a review from an Amazon customer:
But there is a catch...this time round Edsel are a little vague about how they are sourced/mastered (CD 'Mastering' only, no reference to sourced from Master Tapes - except the Big Value remix which refers to Tape - or any Remastering). There is a reason for this - most of the bonuses (at least) on CD1 are from vinyl, and unfortunately obviously so in the case of the early 7" only material. This was initially a bit of a shock, bearing in mind the other Thompson Twins releases, and the pressings are not always the best quality. On CD2 the first few bars of "In The Name of Love" include rumble that sounds a bit like vinyl source, and there are occasional split/distorted hi-hat/crashes on other tracks, so this could be the case here too. However the extras on this disc are much generally much better sound quality than on CD1.

Oh man - wish I'd read Scott's review prior to buying this myself while I was in London this week. I almost don't even want to listen to it now.

Thanks for the heads up. I need to watch my spending as it is, so it's good to know I can pass on this one, despite the fact that I was looking forward to it! But, hey! This just leaves more money for the Red Box.

Johnny from Demon Music posted a false claim on the review section of this CD on Amazon.co.uk. He claims all available masters were used, which is clearly not the case. This is Demon Music for you...

"All available masters" is a pretty vague claim in the first place. Does he mean "available" as in "it's available to anyone who'll pay a researcher to slog through the archives" or "it's available if you just look under the card table you have set up in the spare bedroom?" "Ooops, I looked under the card table, not there, must not be available..."

I think a lot of these labels realize the CD era is running out so they need to crap out as much product as they possibly can while they can and damn the consequences. I've stopped blind-buying remasters in most cases.

Sounds perfectly fine to me. I have high-end stereo equipment. Maybe it sounds bad on headphones, but I don't use headphones.

And that's exactly why shoddy products like this will continue to be released...

Not to mention...a bunch of the bonus tracks on the A Product Of disc, are presented at a slower than normal speed.

Out of all these Thompson Twins Re-issues that Edsel has put out, this one is the worst. And, the thing that really gets me...they know that the "die-hard fans" are going to buy them all. Pretty sucky, if you ask me. I was really disappointed with Into The Gap, and a little with QS&SK. You'd think I would've learned my lesson. Nope. [xx(]

Did you really buy the Edsel release? Or, did you download a fanmade version that's been floating about the net a couple years? There's a fanmade version of both albums, each with similar bonus tracks...and the quality is superior to the Edsel release.

I agree. These sound extremely bad. I am not quite sure why they even bothered. I would guess many people made their own CD-R from mint vinyl that blows away this Edsel release. I cannot even bare to listen to it.

My sound system is pretty decent, Carver amp, Denon pre-amp, CD players, and Boston Acoustic speakers, but I bought their high end line. And at least on my system, the vinyl is extremely evident. Maybe Barmy has a setting to filter out that obvious noise, or maybe a noise reduction component or something, I don't have that so it comes through loud and clear for me. My own vinyl to CD transfer is much much better. I had hoped to have a legit CD, so much for that....legit just meaning "done right"

Too bad Edsel didn't use your services Rubellan.
