Opins? Private Forum for Postings?

Discuss hard-to-find or out-of-print New Wave and '80s Alternative, and share a few songs along the way.

The thing is, with our other thing, you can look at a person's shared folder and be completely overwhelmed by the wealth of material there is to choose from and totally forget what you were looking for. Sometimes you don't even know what you're looking for. If something's so obscure how could you have heard of it? What are you going to do, grab everything you never heard of? The great thing about posting a request is that whoever has it can say hey, here you go. We have discussions and that's how we discover what we want.

I say post your (rare and oop) requests or what you have and personally e-mail them to the person through their profile. You can e-mail someone a link directly through yousendit.com without even opening up an e-mail client. Posting links here probably should really stop altogether.

I see no need for such an assertion, and I think it should be retracted. I post purely out of the joy of sharing nigh impossible-to-find stuff with people who share my eclectic musical tastes.

I didn't see or hear of anybody pointing a finger at you or anyone else specifically. I heard it as that being someone's feeling or impression, that's all. They're free to feel that way and you're free to disagree and protest. Asking for a retraction is a bit much IMHO.

I didn't say it was a finger specifically pointed, just that it was pointed. It was unnecessary IMHO. Although, in deference to your humble opinion, I'll retract my request for a retraction.

Waver, I hope you were'nt offended by any of my comments as I certainly did not mean to subversively imply that you have made any irresponsible posts. I know that you, Synthpop, MSK Remember, and a few others have put up some very valuable, rare, hard to find and out of print material by artists no longer under the auspices of a record label or by now defunct labels. In addition I'd like to add that the majority of material posted falls into this category. But we have had a few instances of people putting up relatively mainstream stuff. In fact, now that I think about it I think I made a post or two like that in my recent Pet Shop Boy collaboration commentary [B)] The legalese can become quite vague also when it comes to television and radio broadcasts as the intellectual property falls into the ownership of the broadcast company and not the artist. What if that company no longer exists? I'm certainly no expert in these matters but just want to throw in a little more to think about. I dunno, none of us are experts so I really feel it's prudent that we err on the side of caution. We have a great thing going on here. Let's not ruin it.
[/quote]

MarvyMarv, no worries, you're still Marvy in my book. :)

My beef was mainly directed at a comment made by eight6.

And I agree emphatically that no readily available stuff should be posted here. If someone requests a song that still happens to be in print, then he or she can be directed as to where to buy it. Likewise, if someone posts a song that is still in print, he or she can be politely advised of such, and the link can be removed.

I think Blir meant that, although he hates the idea of a private forum for veterans, i.e. for elitist purposes, he might entertain the thought of a private forum for the sole purpose of keeping this stuff private.

Oops, sorry for butting in. [:I]

Great topic!

I believe that the upsurge of downloadable file posts began when the hub had gone down. And I'm sure the vast majority of what was made available was legitimately of the hard-to-find / out-of-print variety. But I'll admit that I was a bit worried to see the forwardness of it all. Beforehand, we basically responded to posters with requests, and often by e-mail.

At least the yousendit posts expire after 7 days, but that may be irrelevant.

I'd rather not see a separate private password-controlled forum here; it is elitist. The hub can serve the same purpose anyway, I think. In either case, a bit of due diligence should be necessary before accepting a new member. A minimum number of posts here is reasonable.

I've witnessed the demise of Torchmatic's site, the silence of Blake's/thefirstcut.net, the many incarnations of audiparagon/pure obscure (which once hosted an FTP sever)... and would HATE to see anything similar happen here.

An FAQ is probably in order. Perhaps a consensus could be reached.

Yeah, the idea of a private forum is not to keep us out. It's to keep the prying eyes of "the man" out. Right now every post on this forum eventually shows up on search engines like Google. Just do a Google search for something obscure in the New Wave genre and you are likely to find hits right here at the NWO.

If any idiot using Google can find out what's being traded here, then so can "the man".

O.K., since you've called me out, perhaps you'll dig up the offending comment, and let me (and others here) know why it is you feel guilty enough to vehemently protest it. I don't recall using your name, nor do I care what you think or do: I merely stated a fact as I saw it. If I was going to call you out, I would have used your name, unlike you, who took 3 or 4 posts to sheepishly get around to it.

I can hardly wait to read your reply. (hint, don't forget to imply I have Nazi leanings)

Didn't know about your Nazi leanings. Hope they're working out for you.

As for "sheepishly" not mentioning your name, I thought you and everyone else would have known to whom I was referring. Apparently not, so here ya go:

"The Yousendit thing has morphed into a posting competition for those who have, and a scavenger hunt for those who have not." "The latest rash of 'me too' Yousendit posts are not in response to a request, rather, they are just a giveaway."

I'm protesting unnecessarily inflammatory comments, not because I feel guilty, which I don't, because I have no reason to. And I never said you said my name. I was speaking on behalf of all who have generously posted songs here. Yeah, I'm sure they were all doing it to show how cool they were because they have huge libraries of obscure stuff that nobody else has. Yeah, that's the ticket.

Leanings?!!!

It's a well known fact that gay pedophilic Arab Republicans from Utah grew up Hitlers brain inside of a human/mouse hybrid and then had Philippino poseur New Wavers from the RIAA perform a late-term partial birth abortion to harvest the brain and transplant it into your head in order to execute one of the most insidious plots the world had ever seen to plant high explosives around the perimeters of both World Trade Center towers as part of a conspiracy to have said actions discovered and traced back to extremist Zionist perpetrators in the hope that such an action would permanently poison Israeli-US relations and break the Jewish lobbying lock on the so-called rightist Congress and thus open the doorway for some serious conservatism the likes of which would make the most radical leather-clad S&M shaven-genital post-Weimar Republic nationalist blush so that even a tossed salad couldn't distract him!

PS. It's funny because it's true. [:D]

You still haven't explained why the statement isn't true...not that I expect you to, because it is the truth. And as far as sharing, I've done plenty, but I never felt the need to post multiple links to unrequested songs.

I guess I had the foresight to see that the needless posting of my collection might be an endangerment to something that MikeP has put a lot of time and effort into. Not to mention the fact that there are many people who enjoy the site for it's participants as much as it's musical content, and as such it would be a shame for NWO to be closed down.

If you're going to be a member of this or any other board, try not to be so sensitive as to see yourself as the target of every post. Frankly, I didn't even think of you when I made the reference, I was thinking of a few others.

My, but we are important...

I was really enjoying the file posting in this forum, but if it puts the NWO at risk, then I agree that it should be curtailed.

A private forum would probably be the best solution. I doubt it would offer much more in the way of security, but at least no one would be able to say that the files were made readily available to the general public the way they are now when we post them here using You Send It.

Oh GAWD BLIR, that above paragraph was just too dang funny!! [:D]You slay me! And such correct grammar, adroitly strung together with a plethora of Prepositional phrases. Mmmm.

Oh, and I also would not want to do anything to jeopardize the NWO. I say discretion is in order by all of us. No more directly posted links.
