Don't ask me why, but I like listening to long, moody New Wave songs when I'm driving alone in the dark.

Here are some of the songs from the playlist:

"How Soon Is Now" by The Smiths
"The Killing Moon" by Echo and the Bunnymen
Duran Duran's "The Chauffeur"
Sometimes I play "Blue Monday" by New Order if I feel like bumping from one end of my car to the other
a-ha's "Locust" is another somber piece

My question is: do you know of any other songs that fit this category? I can only listen to "How Soon Is Now" so many times. (I even made a blog entry about a particular experience when that song was playing. It's available at:

Anyway...

Anyone know any good songs along those lines?

oh yeah, sorry...I shoulda said The Mission(UK) was Wayne Hussey's band after he split with The Sisters...and a lot of Clan of Xymox stuff falls in here nicely too...

- Atmosphere - Joy Division
- Never Let Me Down Again - Depeche Mode (especially the 9-minute extended version)
- Pretty much any of the Sisters Of Mercy/Jim Steinman gothfests. (Jim Steinman?! I always thought that was funny...)

Seems like the type of songs you are talking about have a preponderance (exceeding in heaviness; having
greater weight;) towards the Minor keys tones -- just an observation. I like all the songs mentioned so far.

I could say a bunch of Joy Division stuff but I won't bore you with that and leave it at "Atrocity Exhibition". But how about:

Bela Lugosi's Dead - Bauhaus...of course!
The Killing Moon - Echo...but I vote for the "all night version" found on Crystal Days
Pale Shelter - TFF...the long version on The Ultimate Collection is very cool
Nowhere Girl - B-Movie...the full extended version is kinda dark I guess

Gotta love the Clan of Xymox mentions (esp. their "Twist of Shadows"--great album!), but I'm surprised "Doot-Doot" and "Seconds" by Human League haven't been mentioned. Very haunting, synth drenched tracks.
