Long, Dark NW Songs

Postby TheMunDial » Mon Oct 03, 2005 5:13 am

Don't ask me why, but I like listening to long, moody New Wave songs when I'm driving alone in the dark.

Here are some of the songs from the playlist:

"How Soon Is Now" by The Smiths
"The Killing Moon" by Echo and the Bunnymen
Duran Duran's "The Chauffeur"
Sometimes I play "Blue Monday" by New Order if I feel like bumping from one end of my car to the other
a-ha's "Locust" is another somber piece

My question is: do you know of any other songs that fit this category? I can only listen to "How Soon Is Now" so many times. (I even made a blog entry about a particular experience when that song was playing. It's available at:

www.myspace.com/alfredeus

On the right, click on the entry titled "The Killing Time -- Unwillingly Mine".)

Anyway...

Anyone know any good songs along those lines?

I love New Orders- Everythings gone green

Help me, somebody help me
I wonder where I am
I see my future before me
I'll hurt you when I can
It seems like I've been here before

Confusion sprung up from devotion
A halo that covers my eyes
It sprung from this first estrangement
No one have I ever despised
Is this the way that you wanted to pay
Won't you show me, please show me the way
Is this the way that you wanted to pay
Won't you show me, please show me the way

Folks,

Lessee here...howzabout these:

- Atmosphere - Joy Division
- Never Let Me Down Again - Depeche Mode (especially the 9-minute extended version)
- Pretty much any of the Sisters Of Mercy/Jim Steinman gothfests. (Jim Steinman?! I always thought that was funny...)
- One Hundred Years - The Cure

And a couple of newer ones:

- Lonely Soul - U.N.K.L.E. featuring Richard Ashcroft
- Pearl's Girl - Underworld

Duran Duran's - Lonely In Your Nightmare
A Flock of Seagulls - Man Made
Alanis Morissette - Uninvited
Shakespear's Sister - Stay

Seems like the type of songs you are talking about have a preponderance (exceeding in heaviness; having
greater weight;) towards the Minor keys tones -- just an observation. I like all the songs mentioned so far.

I could say a bunch of Joy Division stuff but I won't bore you with that and leave it at "Atrocity Exhibition". But how about:

Bela Lugosi's Dead - Bauhaus...of course!
The Killing Moon - Echo...but I vote for the "all night version" found on Crystal Days
Pale Shelter - TFF...the long version on The Ultimate Collection is very cool
Nowhere Girl - B-Movie...the full extended version is kinda dark I guess
The Missing Boy - Durutti Column
Ann Frank Story - Human Sexual Response

Swamp Thing (Live)--The Chameleons. This version clocks in at over six minutes
Faded Flowers--Shriekback, not long, but dark
Say Hello, Wave Goodbye (extended)--Soft Cell
Pornography--The Cure--The band at its most depressing and amelodic
God Only Knows--Gary Numan--Metallic and dark
The Fool--The Fixx
Lost Weekend--Wall of Voodoo. My vote for Stan Ridgeway's best song
Dirty Epic--Underworld. "I get my kicks on Channel Six"
Dust Bowl Days--10,000 Maniacs. Just Natalie Merchant and an acoustic guitar. I should put this on Blir's Evocative lyrics post

Gotta love the Clan of Xymox mentions (esp. their "Twist of Shadows"--great album!), but I'm surprised "Doot-Doot" and "Seconds" by Human League haven't been mentioned. Very haunting, synth drenched tracks.
