Name That Tune: Signature WLIR Classics!

I'd like to make a few comments concerning this NTT and the various responses that people have posted, especially those bemoaning their "ignorance", and how regional the New Wave scene was.

First of all, kudos to 2NU and Waukena for putting this together, and Blir for hosting it. And for those whose sent in their answers (I didn't). And secondly, I only listened to LIR/DRE sporadically, until the latter half of 1989 (when I moved back to Long Island).

The songs selected do not represent the most widely played songs on LIR necessarily (not that they should have been). Think about it. LIR played a LOT of Depeche Mode, Smiths/Morrissey, New Order, Erasure, Human League. But they are not among the 25 songs listed here. Why? Probably because it would be too easy to guess them.
LIR broadcast New Wave for about 10 years (1981-1991), almost 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. So they played plenty of songs. The 25 selected represent 2NU and Waukena's choices, not the most commonly played songs.
So to summarize my point...LIR was playing a lot of songs in common with other new wave stations/programs. This NTT selection of songs is subjective, and was probably meant to stimulate some forgotten memories, relive some personal moments, and open new minds to the variety and depth of LIR's programming.
Again, no negativity is implied here; just expressing my opinion/take on the responses it elicited.

IMHO, it was a particularly important personal selection of music since it represented a fairly broad range of music that really caught my ear back in that VERY brief span of time when they were given airplay on WLIR only to vanish and languish in musical obscurity (save for occasional mention on NWO). These songs would NEVER have gotten airplay in any other terrestrial radio market then or since. It was both a pleasure and a priviledge to participate in this musical exercise.[;)]

I guess it might look like this was skewed in favor of Lawn Guylanders (and not that I'd include me in that group, since I wasn't born here, didn't live here in the time frame in question, and don't really listen to the radio anywhere), but if anything, I think it was skewed in favor of people who watched MTV... you know, during that time frame in the fairly-distant past when they actually showed videos. Anyone who had the channel on from '83-'88 stood a good chance of seeing the clips for "Make a Circuit with Me," "I Want You Back," "Heaven (Must Be There)," "Baby's in the Mountains," "Scatterlings of Africa," "You Got Me Going Again," "Bridges over Borders," "Birth, School, Work, Death" and a few others. I saw the clip for the Machinations song. I didn't remember the song, but I remembered the video. Go figure.

You nailed it Fritz. New Order, Depeche Mode, Smiths etc weren't "signature" to anyone...everybody played. But to LIR and the ROQ, the Plimsouls, 20/20, Godfathers, Hilary, etc were indeed very "signature".

Waukena, that is funny as hell. I relate to your recollection of WLIR a little more then 2Nu's. ( I think we are close in age??) I do not remember Tenpole Tudor- Swords of a Thousand Men. If you have it, send it to me please, I'd like to hear it.
