You also forgot to mention that within Latin America, they're incredibly racist and mistreat the REAL indigenous peeps/descendants of the Mayans and Aztecs (i.e. cases like Chiapas).

Fences work at lessening the cost of illegal immigration. I saw a report on that on Lou Dobbs's Moneyline. They interviewed this guy from SD who had one built and there were less of them coming on that side. Hell, make a high-voltage fence and see how it flies[8D]

It`s nobody`s fault but your own for not having Healthcare for three years.

That's really uncalled for. There are far too many people who do not qualify for Medicaid because they make too much, yet do not have health insurance, cannot afford it, and cannot afford much beyond rent & groceries - if even that.

I was in just such a place even 10 years ago, making just above the requirement for assistance with heating costs, while struggling to pay other utilities, rent, etc., and hoping that I don't get sick because I can't afford it, and trying to figure out how I'm going to stretch $20 for 2 weeks.

Not everyone who needs help gets it.

You're absolutely right. I should have given up those silly frivolities like food, shelter, water, gas and electricity so I could pay for health insurance.

Or maybe I should have quit my job and then I could have qualified for government help. My pride would not let me.

When you are part of the lower middle class, you struggle to survive. I think it's much harder to be in that class than any other. The true bottom-of-the-rung, low income people really have it made with their food stamps, Medicaid, HUD, WIC and whatnot. The lower middle class just finds a way to "get by," whether that is "getting by" with less food, less heat, no getting sick permitted, etc.

I thank God everyday that those years are far behind me. It was not a great time in our lives. Thank you for reminding me of those years, however, because I'm thankful for them, too. Being in that situation makes you appreciate what you have even more, and it also makes you a better person. I can truly empathize with people who are srtuggling and trying so hard to make it and not just run my mouth and tell them they deserve what they get.

I didn`t mean to offend you. I also understand the high cost of medical insurance & life expenses in general but I just didn`t like the whole Mexican bashing.

I don't hate Mexicans at all, though I can definitely see where you might think that. I'll all for anyone of any race/nationality LEGALLY immigrating here. What I hate is that people--mostly Mexicans, I'll say it--come to the U.S. illegally and expect to be catered to. They want their kids to have our schooling, they want their kids to have our healthcare, they want to make our wages, etc. but they don't want to assimilate into our country. They don't want to learn our language and they appear to pledge their first loyalty to Mexico--the very place they just left.

And because they are here illegally, they work under the radar, driving down the living wage for the rest of us. It used to be that construction workers could make a living wage, could support their families. Not anymore. Not when there are loads of under-the-radar workers willing to work for next to nothing.

And I know this is a generalization--I know there are people who are here illegally who aren't as I've described. But I've lived in two states now (Texas and Nevada) that appear to me to have an overabundance of the people I've described. It frustrates me.

I have the utmost respect for anyone who wants to come to America LEGALLY. Hell, if I weren't here, I'd sure want to be. I don't blame anyone for wanting to come here. But it seems to me that being an American means a whole lot more to someone who has to actually work for it. They assimilate--this becomes their home, their nation. I don't respect anyone who hops over the border and expects to be catered to. Jump through the hoops and show me that you really want to be here. Pledge your allegiance to the US and not the country you obviously just fled.

I don't think anyone is bashing Mexican's. We as American citizens expect people from Mexico or any other country to come to our country legally. We are a country of laws. We expect our government to enforce these laws. It's actually quite simple.

Since when is it okay to break the law? If I don't pay my taxes the government will take my home away. Or put my ass in jail. When does something illegal become okay? When a million people are doing it?

I live in a diversified area which I love. My children and myself for that matter have friends that are Spanish, Indian, Russian, Korean, Pakistani, Chinese, Italian, you name it. I don't have any problem with anybody, as long as they are here in my country legally.

I totally get bidmadgirl. When I first read her post, I couldn't have agreed with her more. And I admire her struggles. I to emphasize with anyone who is struggling in this country. It could happen to anyone of us.

As far as imagrants, I work in Brighton Beach which is also called Little Odessa. It is where all Russians come first in this country. They are here 1 generation. ONE! They speak english, their kids all go to college, and they want the american dream. The guys I work with are in the country less than 20 years and they all have jobs, cars, and houses. These people love america and realize that there is huge opportunity in this country if you play by the right rules. They know to get ahead you need to speak english. I think its odd that their are other people in this country that are here for generations and don't speak english. It totally works against them.

Illegal, not legal, breaking the law. It happens to be mostly Mexicans in CA but I'm not against them for being Mexicans, I'm against them because they're illegal and harmful. I'm against Companies that hire them and I would be against those who use their services except for the fact that there is no competition to hire. By working 'off the books' without benefits, taxes and worker rights these guys save their employers big time and honest guys can't compete.

It seems to be also true that Americans are unable to do the work. As a former CEO of HP pointed out, Americans show up willing to learn, Asians and East Indians show up ready to work. Our educational system does not seem to prepare Americans for the job market.
