You're absolutely right. I should have given up those silly frivolities like food, shelter, water, gas and electricity so I could pay for health insurance.
Or maybe I should have quit my job and then I could have qualified for government help. My pride would not let me.
When you are part of the lower middle class, you struggle to survive. I think it's much harder to be in that class than any other. The true bottom-of-the-rung, low income people really have it made with their food stamps, Medicaid, HUD, WIC and whatnot. The lower middle class just finds a way to "get by," whether that is "getting by" with less food, less heat, no getting sick permitted, etc.
I thank God everyday that those years are far behind me. It was not a great time in our lives. Thank you for reminding me of those years, however, because I'm thankful for them, too. Being in that situation makes you appreciate what you have even more, and it also makes you a better person. I can truly empathize with people who are srtuggling and trying so hard to make it and not just run my mouth and tell them they deserve what they get.
