We had a treadmill in the house for about 5 years, and I used it on occasion, but mainly I run outside around dusk for about an hour 3-4 times a week and that's plenty.

We have a treadmill and a schwinn force which is a cheaper version of the Bowflex. My husband uses the schwinn force, I only use the treadmill. It's good but I still dry laundry on it too. [:D]

Yoga is more for a mental workout--centering, calming, that sort of thing. If you do it often, it can help keep you toned---but hexicon is right: it's useful as part of an excercise program, but not all by itself to keep you in shape.

mechi's comment about running after trains is pretty funny--and true! I have lots of vivid memories of running after trains in Europe; with a backpack on, I'm sure weight was lost.

I walk, bike, hike, garden, and walk the dogs a lot. Works for me.

I have the StairMaster and I like to walk and jog outdoors too. I use the StairMaster only on rainy days.

Gee Philly I wasn't calling you a middle aged guy with a paunch. I was just noting that the guys I see buy exercise equipment are usually looking for an excuse not to exercise.

Yoga is great. It maintains flexibility and balance and keeps all your muscles working together to prevent injury by exercising all of them including the ones in your fingers and toes and the ones that keep your bones together. It's basically an advanced stretching and breathing exercise but you shouldn't take that to mean it's easy. It only looks passive. Yoga requires no equipment and you can do it in your living room or in the park, or even in line at the grocery store which I do. You should check it out.

I agree Yoga alone will not build muscles but it will let you use them and keep them longer. When did you last exercise your digestive muscles or the ones that support your internal organs. You need them all not just your heart.

Stella, no problem. I knew you didn't mean it that way. And I do thank you for the yoga advice. I really think I will try it. Do you do it?
