Anyone using Nike+?

Postby DonGately » Sun Nov 05, 2006 12:47 am

I did my first half-marathon recently (walked the first 11, ran the last two) and am now training to run a marathon (or run/walk depending on how the training goes). Recently, I picked up the Nike+ IPod Nano system and I'm getting addicted to it. You put a sensor in your shoe, which communicates with a receiver on your iPod, and you get realtime data as you run or walk. Then when you plug your iPod in to your computer, all the data gets uploaded to a website, where you can track it, share w/others, set goals, join challenges, etc.

Is there anyone else on the board using this?

Personally I do not use any technology (e.g. MP3 player, watch, heart monitor), but that's me; whatever helps/motivates you. go for it. Good luck in your running,

Good luck in your running! Your other post (about Bangalore) was inspiring....I have just begun running and I love it so far. And I have always wondered how far I'm going, how fast, how long, etc. That doodad sounds pretty cool.

Don, Congrats on the Half-Marathon. I've been runing since Feb '85 and love it, though I'm injured at the moment -- my right calf and hamstring are having some pain and tightness, so I'm talking a break and stretching daily.

I read about the Nike+ in the New York Times last week and it looks pretty cool. Last year I bought an iPod Shuffle and a Polar RS100 and like them very much. I agree with schwenko -- whatever helps get you out on the road and enjoying your running is great.

I've run 6 marathons and numerous 10k, 5k, half-marathons as well as about 12-1500 miles per year. There is a huge difference between the half and the full marathon. If there is a training program you can get in with in your area that's a big help. also sites like http://www.halhigdon.com have different training programs for race lengths levels from Novice, Intermediate - I, Intermediate - II, Advanced - I and Advanced - II marathoners.

http://www.marathonguide.com has some good information as well.

Good luck on the road.

Good to hear from all of you. I love the solitude of running, but it's always great in a fellowshippy kind of way to hear from other runners. I'm using "Marathoning for Mortals" (written by that Penguin guy and a woman who built Team in Training's training program) as my guide for the marathon. I used it for the half-marathon as well and I finished that one well ahead of my projected time. I also have a good friend who is a marathoner -- he has helped me out a lot in terms of teaching me about refueling during a run, the plusses and minuses of different types of gear, etc.
