Killers 'Tranquilize" single & Sawdust comp

I might actually give this single & upcoming comp a listen if it has a lot of stuff that's not so self-consciously grandiose like Sam's Town. I mean, Lou Reed collaboration on 'Tranquilize' and Joy Division's 'Shadowplay' - can't be all bad.

I think that's what kinda kills The Killers (so to speak) for me - it always looked like they had one eye on the arena, and in a non-ironic way...

Killers- "Sawdust" First Impression:

Thumbs Up!

I was fearing that these guys would fade into oblivion like so many bands that are blessed with such early success. Based on this release it looks like they may have some staying power.

"All the Pretty Faces" is signature Killers with it's driving beat, dark bass line undercurrent and synthy keyboards. The same can be said for "Under The Gun".

"Sweet Talk" would be at home on a U2 album with it's "Mysterious Ways" beat, theme of spiritual redemption and Brandon Flowers channeling Bono's falsetto.

The Killer's take on Joy Division's "Shadowplay" is a worthy tribute. And overing the Kenny Roger's classic, "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town" is a nice touch and shows they don't take themselves too seriously.

Perhaps they are playing it straight with "Ruby" and the joke's on me.

We'll have to wait for the next album and see if they cover "The Pina Colada Song"!

I'm so into "Shadowplay" right now! It's one of those songs I'm listening to non-stop on my iPod. I think The Killers did a nice cover...it's not a complete ripoff of the Joy Division version, they put their own little spin on it.

It's funny rewind, but I'm sitting here thinking that "Shadowplay" sucks more and more every time I listen to it. I'm not trying to combative...just noting how funny tastes are. In fact, hearing their "Shadowplay" makes me kinda depressed about the whole Joy Division revival thing as a whole. This will sound petty, but it used to actually feel special pulling out my original FAC 10 Unknown Pleasures and soaking in songs that felt extremely personal. All this attention somehow makes it seem not so special anymore. I know that's weird. [B)]

Not so weird. I think that happens with most people. I know that once my little secret favorite band gets "commercial", some of the appeal is lost.

As an example, I think the same thing happens to those people who won't allow themselves to like U2 as much as they used to, even thought the music is just as good.

I still find The Killer's cover quite listenable. Now if top 40 radio and MTV took it to the masses and housewives in supermarkets across America were humming along to it, I'd probably lose some interest. Familiarity breeds contempt.
