the reign of the 'music press twats' was the 60s and 70s;
they came undone by the 1980s, for one reason;
MTV..prior to that, the 'coolness' factor affected folks in America,in fact when the first recordings of Duran Duran,Adam & the Ants, Billy Idol,etc were released in America, they bombed, as FM rock radio and Rolling Stone didn't want to know, and AM Top 40 was all about Air Supply, Olivia Newton John and "Islands In The Stream";
MTV changed all that, the 'music press' stranglehold came undone;
sadly for the folks in england, the UK twats continued to wield power via NME, Melody Maker, etc, but even so, things changed there as well eventually..
but GaGa would have been given the heave ho in the circumstances prior to the MTV 80's;
and a dead on bore like Elvis Costello(WHO?) wouldn't have even got the 15 minutes that he got here; he never really had a 'hit' here,per se,and most folks who aren't on this message board wouldn't have clue who he was(lucky them)
